I just purchased a DAW and CBase VST 5 (with a LPT dongle) was thrown in with the deal. Is this still considered a decent piece of software. Do I need to upgrade?

I'm recording acoustic instruments and would like to put my money toward decent mic and/or pre-amps

Thanks

:)

It's not necessary to upgrade but probably wouldn't be a bad idea. I think you need to update the license though for a minimal fee.

you may not br able to upgrade at all... not sure... but steiny just announced no support for several old progs... think you just bought one... but with a prog that old how old is the puter???

Steinberg offers basic upgrades for Cubase vst 5 that can be found here: http://www.steinberg.net/index.php?id=901&L=1 As for needing to upgrade to a better or newer version, It seems to me that you are fairly new to the DAW recording world and I will let you know that as far as learning how everything works in Cubase and how to integrate multi-channels and vst plugins for recording etc. this program is perfect for you. It will definitely allow you to record acoustic instruments well as long as you have a decent sound card and will teach you a lot along the way. Then when you get great at using this program and decide to upgrade, it won’t scare you away by seeming so intimidating. :)

Cheers and Have fun with your new Toy!
