Cubase to Cubase problems

Hi there,

Having troubles as am working with a friend on a project and need to share files. He uses Cubase SL and I have Cubase SX. When we try to open a Cubase file from one version on another it fails to open.

Instead there are error messages saying that it cannot locate a file etc.

Does anyone know what is wrong because (and I'm ashamed to say this) I don't have a bloody clue! But it would be really useful if one of us could work on a track save it and pass it on to the other.

If anyone can help we'd be really grateful.

Cheers guys!

First, you have to make sure you have all the same files that the header file looks for. These are usually your actual audio files in the audio folder of each song or project. Second, Cubase SX should have no problem opening up a file from SL, but SL may not be able to open certain files from SX. SX offers some features that SL does not, and this can create real issues between the two.

im not completely sure.. but cubase might save its files differently in each version.. i think there was a change when they went to cubase sx.. although SX should be able to open older files, but not the other way around...

also.. are you sure youre moving the whole project folder,, and all the files...?? 1 song will probably fill most of a cd (with enough tracks) .. i usually have to back up my projects to DVD..

you might have to also point to the new (moved) files....

????

I have opened Nuendo files in Cubase ok, so I think you should be able to open SL in SX as long as they have the same suffix, i.e., *.npr.

Are you exchanging the entire project folder, or just the .cpr file?

Thanks everyone so far for your help.

To make a simple example, I have saved the cubase file and the .csh file onto my computer (they are from SL, I have SX).
It tells me there is a missing file: ...Audio2_11.wav
So I search for it and find the file with the same name, but selecting it brings up: "Error: Invalid or Unsupported file!"
The next thing that comes up is something about a VST connection, although I am sure that's something to do with instrument programs he has that I don't - drums etc. But for now I am more concerned about just transporting files with just guitar, basic effects, nothing flashy.
I okay that screen and then all I've got is a load of tracks with straight lines or dashed lines and absolutely no sound.

Is it something to do with Audio files not being transfered? Or demonolgy? Help please!

Sorry to be such an idiot about all this but it's the first thing that's really stumped me since I ever started using this software. Not that I've used it for anything elaborate....yet. And it is standing right in the way of progress. Thanks again for all the help!

Cheers
Dave :(

You need to have to whole project folder, not just the .cpr file. For this to work he will need to have the exact same plugins (if your using VSTis)

*edit* You should be saving each project into its own folder otherwise what you are guranteed to do is to put all your projects into one folder; which is bad since you wont know what audio goes to which project. You can always "save project to new folder" and it will copy everything it needs for that project

To expand on the above answer, you need to copy the entire project folder. In this folder should be the .cpr file as well as an audio and image folder. All the audio tracks (like the one it is asking for) are stored in the audio folder - without the audio you don't have a project.........

I have also opened Nuendo files inside Cubase SX, but that was Nuendo 2 files in SX3. That does not mean that SL will also open SX files though. Nuendo and SX are actually more similar in a lot of ways than SX and SL. For example, how would SL treat an SX file that has 6 inserts on a given channel?
