Hello,

What is the main difference between vst5 and sx? And is Cubase vst5 proffesional enough to make cd quality recordings from music-instruments, with buildin pickups(piezo) with an m-audio delta 44?

Any answer is welcome,

It is, but that's not the point..... more like, are your skills high-enough to produce CD-Quality recordings (which, incidently, is not that high an indicator of audio quality!)?

VST 5.0 is great. SX looks even better, but I haven't taken the plunge - don't want to upgrade my PC to WinXP.

As BlueBear so aptly points out - it mostly hinges on your abilities, not the software. But neither VST5 nor SX present any serious limitations.

SX has surround abilities and a highly configurable mixer, as well as some other bells and whistles that make it more pleasant to use if you are going to be doing a lot of work with it.

VST 5.0 does all the basics, and more, that you need it to do, though. I prefer SX, but VST will get you going with all that you need to keep going indefinately.

That said, I'm not sure they are going to be developing the VST line anymore and will be focusing on the SX line. You might concider Cubase SL, a lower cost version of SX with fewer bells and whistles but all the enhancements that makes SX a step up from VST.

Either way, rest assured that you have a good enough program to max out your skill. I've been recording with VST, SX, and now Pro Tools and I have yet to run into the limits of my skills. If something doesn't sound right it has always been me and not the program.

(I changed programs because I could, really, not because I was dissatisfied with what I was using before. New toys are always nice. :))

Take care,
Chris

Thanks for the replies. They where very usefull. A ''musical'' friend of mine just switched to Logic (he bought an mac) and is welling to sell me his Sx-cubase. I tried it on my pc but i keep getting the following error:

"Audio engine system error"

I tried buffersize but it makes no difference. When i click ok at ther error message it comes up instantly again. I can hear some sound coming from my speakers.

Does anyone here knows what is the problem? Vst runs perfecty. Could it be the soundblaster? I'm using an simple sb-Live, but very soon an delta 44.

Thanks again for your help,

I was able to use VST 5 with both my SBLive and my Delta66, no problems (but not both at once - SBL is disconnected now).

A couple of things to check:

Make sure you have the latest SBLive drivers from Creative for your OS.
Make sure you don't have audio options set that are incompatible with your SBLive, like ASIO or 24-bit defaults.
Did you install from scratch? If not, do so, then apply any upgrades. Pay particular attention to your audio options.

Good luck.

update?

Are you running Cubase SX on XP, 2k or 98? If your a 98 user, be sure to get the latest update, which is SX 1.0.5.61 (I think!). This update allow you to use SX under 98.

uh..well, if u r any other OS, you should update anyway ...gna!

I got this "Audio Engine Sys Error" message a few times with earlier version, and my Echo Mona 24 soundcard, but I cant confirm the exact cause because I update my SX and bought a new soundcard about the same day, and I didnt get this message since this upgrade.

VST and SX differences:

SX is based on Nuendo audio engine. So this is a MAJOR difference. SX is sample accurate, VST isnt. The mixer is very friendly, the automation is pretty cool too! I'm often working with cubase since Cubase 3, and I hated this software until SX came out. Before SX I was a Nuendo user. ...cant wait to try Nuendo 2!

As was already said, you should be able to make very high-quality recording with either VST5 or SX. I really like SX more than VST5 for these reasons:

1. SX has unlimited undo. This is great for trying things out and then undoing them. Make multiple edits and listen to how it sounds. If you don’t like it, undo it.
2. Automation is much easier to work with in SX. You can draw it in with a pencil tool if you want. I work this way instead of using the mixer.
3. The user interface is cleaner and simpler to me. MIDI and Audio channels are more similar to each other.
4. You don’t have to worry about the concept of channels anymore. In SX, there are only tracks. Each track is essentially a channel. So you don’t have to assign tracks to channels.

There are lots of other minor things that I like better also, but the above are the major ones for me. As was said, SX supports surround sound, but I don’t use that.

What does VST5 have that SX doesn’t have (yet)?

1. Dynamic events—volume and pan automation that is associated with an audio part and stays with it when you move the part around.
2. SX has no Studio Module, so managing your external keyboard patches in SX is not up to speed with VST. Steinberg is reportedly working on adding something like this for the next major SX version.
3. No automated way to match tempo to a freely recorded audio track. Although there is a manual method that I happen to like better since the VST automated way never worked well for me.
4. There are a bunch of things missing that one might consider minor, things that only a few people probably used like the Interactive Phrase Synthesizer (a kind of arpeggiator toy) and Style trax (I don’t know much about it, never used it.)

Thanks dafduc,

I tried the new drivers for my sb, and voila, no more error. Maybe i'm blind, but can someone tell me how i can change the part-colors in sx. In vst this is at the top, but i can't seem to find it in Sx. (so i want to insert an wav-file and change the color for that part to for example orange).

"Maybe i'm blind, but can someone tell me how i can change the part-colors in sx"

Change your VDU to at least 1024x 768
Then go top right

VST 5.x desktop looks like hardware while SX looks like shitty software

Hi,

just wanted to "upgrade" to SX, cos´I heard from many that win xp is the best and most stable os ever. Some say even better than Mac os.
So I did. But what the heck is that??? The beautiful desktop has all gone. The mixer doesn´t look like a mixer any more neither does the transport look like a tape recorder.
The graphics are all crap and you don´t find anything anymore.
Real nonsense. They should have changed it for good, shouldn´t they?

Regards
Willey
