Cubase & MOTU PCI-324: Athlon or Pentium III?

Hello there, everyone. . .

For better or worse (probably worse!), I am a "newbie" to this web-site/message-forum as well as a "semi-newbie" to he world of home digital/computer-based recording. I hope not to waste too much time and/or space with this topic, but I thought the membership here may be able to provide some invaluable advice.

Here is my scenario:

Within recent months, I splurged and purchased the following home recording hardware & software:

-- MOTU 1224 core system (includes the PCI-324 sound card)
-- Opcode Studio 64XTC MIDI interface
-- Cubase VST 24 version 3.6 for the PC platform(free upgrade via Internet to 3.7 once registered, correct?)

Unfortunately, my current PC just barely meets Cubase’s recommended minimum requirements. Since my system is outdated and seemingly insufficient, I am reluctant to install Cubase and the PCI-324 on my PC. More than likely, I will be in the market for a new PC in the near future. I have been investigating what type of processor/chipset I should consider. Upon talking to the customer service departments at Steinberg and MOTU, their respective representatives strongly suggested that I go with a PentiumIII-based system. However, I was wondering what argument could be made for running Cubase and the PCI-324 card on an Athlon-based system. Does anyone have any experience with running this hardware and/or software on an Athlon machine? Does anyone know of any information/documentation with regard to this topic? Any information would be extremely appreciated. Please feel free to e-mail me: "rhythm26@home.com".

Thank you for reading. . .

go with the pentium.. cubase and your soundcard might not even work right on an athlon system...dont even risk it... DONT BE THE GINNY PIG MAN !!!

Well, I have an athlon 600 and my soundcards all work fine! Cubase VST 3.4 (?) I have had problems with, but these may have been caused by... other things.

I would recommend you try a legit version of 3.6 on an athlon machine before you buy - they problems I was having were basically just with sync.

Cakey, what soundcards? There aren't any issues with consumer grade soundcards (SB Live, etc) that I'm aware of....but there have been *many* reported conflicts with prosumer audio gear and Athlon chipsets.

The Athlon is a great processor. Too bad AMD can't come up with the chipset support.

BAH!! AMD bashers are everywhere.

The truth is, Athlon has a much stronger FPU (floating Point Unit) than the outdated Pentium technology (yes, even the pentium III has a great deal of the antiquated pentium technology at work). I'm sure the Intel lovers that are reading this are going into convulsions about now, but I have done my homework.

I would, however, like to see these problems with soundcards that the Athlon chipsets have. I have an Athlon, and it's always worked perfectly. I'm not saying your full of it -- not at all, I'd just like to see them.

gabriel ,

no one said the athlon sucked.. its just that alot of the better sound cards suck on athlons..

ps...ford is WAY better than chevy..

Here's a suggesstion...go with what the manufaturers advise you to do. Granted, the Athlon is a MUCH BETTER chip...if your harware hasn't been tested on one, then forget it, unless you're some kind of "PC Evil Kineval" and you enjoy the risk...

But think of this, you can get studio results with a 450mhz K6-2/k6-3 or PII. I've even run into a few gents using Celerons with adequate results. If you're daring enough, go with AMD...I use one and have yet to have any problems with ANY hardware or SOFTWARE...and of the systems I've built others, not one of the AMD based systems have had ANY problems either...but I can't garuntee that you won't have any.

P.S. FORD sucks...CHEVY rules...end of discussion.

Slackmaster,

I have succesfully run a SBLive!, Turtle Beach Tropez (ISA!) and a Midiman 2044 simultaneously on my Athlon 600.

Does Cakewalk Pro Audio 9 work with Athlon processors?
