Cubase midi problem

Hi there,
I use cubase LE and recently installed it on my new computer. My sound card is an m-audio audiophile 24/96 and I use an external keyboard which connects to a motif rack es.

My problem is when I record a midi track and play it back, everything is fine. But when I try to record a second midi track, the sound from the motif stutters and delays when I play....but only when I'm recording. Once I stop recording everything plays normally again. I have tried changing latency settings, drivers, re-installing cubase......it is doing my head in.

As I said, this only happens when recording a second midi track - there is huge latency.

Can somebody please offer some advise?

This one is a strange one to me... here's me thinking out loud:

Is there anyway you could substitute another sound module to see if it's that?

Are you connecting the keyboard by USB to the computer and the Motif to the computer by USB as well?

It sounds like the MIDI is overloading a buffer, but if you've got enough RAM you're probably ok. Enough would be at least 512MB I'm guessing. Most people have a lot more than that.

Try another cable between the computer and the Motif (long shot).

The Motif doesn't have any settings you could adjust regarding anything that could pertain to this does it? I had a MOTU MIDI patchbay that had different speeds that you could run it at.

Phone Yamaha? Is there a Motif forum?

I also thought there may have been a setting in the motif that I may have missed, but I've been using this set up for years. I fired up Reaper to see if the same thing happens but there wasn't a problem.

The only thing I have changed is the sound card. I used an average sound card on my old pc with the midi connected to the games port, but since the last few weeks with the new computer I now use an audiophile 2496 card which has its own midi...plus the new pc doesn't have a game port so I can't connect it the old way.

I thought it may be the 2496 card but I assume it would create the same problems in Reaper?? But Reaper works fine.

I'm dumbfounded!

So am I.

How about reinstalling Cubase? I would think that it's Cubase if it works with Reaper. You've probably done that.

Check this out: When I installed the Cubase LE that came with a Lexicon Omega, there were all kinds of problems. It was when Apple was going through their "OS of the Week" mess, say around OS 10.2 to 10.3.9, and Lexicon was chasing them with constant updates. I ended up getting I recall 4 different versions of Cubase LE from Lexicon before it worked. They were all called Cubase LE although there was probably a designation somewhere. If you reinstalled Cubase and it still doesn't work I would suspect that.

Also, is this Mac?
 
Nah it's a PC.

I've reinstalled Cubase LE, still the same problem. As I said, it worked fine on my old PC when I used the "game port" midi, but now that I have to use the midi supplied with the 2496 sound card, the stuttering started......but only when I start recording a second track. It's a mystery.

Thanks for your replies dintymoore, looks like no-one else has any other solutions. Guess I'm switching to Reaper.
 
Strange midi latency is very rare.

Increase your buffersize of your audio card and see what happens.

It must have to do with your new audio card settings.

Are you shure you selected the driver in Cubase under Devices, maybe it is using the crappy windows driver.

OK, I found the solution. If anyone else has this problem, this is what worked for me.

1. Open the Cubase LE folder in program files.
2. Open the "Midi Port Enabler" folder, grab the "ignoreportfilter" and place it in the Cubase LE folder.
3. Re-start cubase and choose the "emulated" midi ports.

As I said, this is what worked for me.
