I am using a Firepod and 8 mikes to record drums and that is working pretty good with plenty to learn about. Currently the mikes are pluged directly into the firepod. Can I plug the mikes into a mixer and then send the channel outputs from the mixer to the firepod. The idea would be to only record 4 tracks at a time on the firepod/ cubase le. Is this a common setup or am I needlessly introducng a noise source? The mixer is a nice 12 channel Yamaha thats seems pretty clean and clean when I send the mikes to it but I have not tried to send the mixer outputs into the firepod and record yet.

THanks!

Unless your mixer will let you bus your 8 mics into 4 channels to record with Cubase LE via the Firepod, I don't see much reason.. But you are adding extra cables and connections into the mix to get noise from.. If you've got the mixer and the Firepod, there's sure nothing stopping you from trying it out and seeing what you get...

If you're just looking to record 8 mics, I think the best route would just be to step on up and get Cubase SE or other software...

If you mean your mixer has direct outs.........yes they will plug into the firepod inputs. If your mixer does not have direct out.......then use the Inserts as direct outs. Never rec from the main outs of the mixer you can't get individual tracks that way.

If you want to put all the drum tracks into 1 track......after you record...then creat a group track and put all the drums tracks into that one track.

do the line level TRS inputs completely bypass the preamp on channels 3-8??? I was sketchy on this so i've only been using the line in on channels 1 and 2 and the spdif for outboard preamps.

Recording etc.

I would just use the inputs of the firewire, and bypass the mixer as far as in going signal. Why would you put extra noise into the recording chain with the decent converters in the firepod? If you need to monitor your tracks, just use the main outs of the firepod into your mixer. If you want to mix after your recording, use the 8 analog outs of the firepod into line ins on 8 channels of your yamaha to use the board's routing ie; effects, eq etc.

All you have to do is assign your recorded tracks to specific outputs on the firepod....either individual tracks or busses......using your recording software. Then you can manipulate your tracks in your yamaha how you wish.

I've had firepods, (they work very well, good units) but recently swapped them out for all Travelers and 896HDs. This is due to extra digital in and out options as well the high converters.

This is what I do:

Record thru the interfaces direct to computer.......after recording, assign outputs from tracks thru the analog outs into a 32X8 Soundtracs, so I may eq etc and grab a little analog sound post recording. Works real nice! Set up templates for assigning ahead of time, saves time....reuse again easy. I use some plugins and eq on the computer, but very little. I have a laptop and a monster rack jobby I built so I may use a hell of alot of pluggins without the things wanting to puke. But prefer to use the mixer for mixing down. Hope this helps, Mike

The manual for Firepod on page 17 & 18 discusses Line Inputs/Preamp Outputs. READ it and NOTE that line inputs on Ch 1 & 2 have precedence over the combo mic/inst inputs on the front of the unit. If a cable is plugged into a line input on the rear of Firepod, then mic/inst input on that channel will be inactive until cable is removed. Check out manual as stated above pg 17 & 18. Then scratch your head and wonder what it all means.

HUH? I wasn't talking about channels 1 and 2, I was just questioning whether or not the line ins on channels 3-8 were suitable for use with external preamps. I have no clue what you're talking about.
