cubase 5 / external hd conflict

hey all ive been using cubase 5 on windows 7 os and brought a new external drive for samples etc...now when ever i try to preview samples/loops in cubase media bay/sound browser cubase stops responding and shuts down..ive been experiencing this problem for over a week now and its really slowing the workflow down and is absolutly doing my nut in i have tried uninstalling/reinstalling cubase and also did factory reset with my laptop reinstalled windows only to find the same problem still persists,ive been working with this program for about 3-4 years and never had any major probs till now...has anyone else had this problem..all was working fine all up untill about a week ago...please please somebody help!!!!!

First thing I would try is Reaper. If the problem persists with that you know you have an operational problem with the "system".

I am also wondering if Cubase 5 is not a bit old for Win 7 and is that 64 bit 7?

its windows 7 64 bit os on my machine ,il try reaper and see if i still get the same problem its strange because if i put my samples folder onto a different external drive or from my desktop i have no problems at all everything runs smoothly,problem is im running out of space hence why i brought a new external (2tb seagate ),ah aswell i didnt have any trouble until i tried to install stylus rmx vst on the new drive due to the massive soundbank it has and things just went pear shaped from there,but as i say everything was running sweet up til then,,gonna look for reaper tho just too see

just tried reaper and seem to have no problems in there!! i can preview the same loops fine but cubase dont seem to wanna know(plays back glitchy sometimes or i may get white noise from media bay/loop browser)
