I am currently trying to enable Cubase 5 to use my Alesis SR-16 drum machine as a MIDI input. My goal is to be able to record MIDI signals real time and map them to some MIDI drumkit. It seems like some people have already done this but for the life of my I cannot figure it out.
My current wiring:
Alesis SR-16 --> M-Audio Uno MIDI to USB --> Computer USB
The Alesis SR-16 MIDI Setup looks like this:
Midi Channel: OMNI
Drum In: ON V1
Drum Out: ON
Note settings
Clock In: OFF
Clock Out: OFF
Midithru: OFF
Program Change: OFF
Note Map: NORMAL
In Cubase 5, I went to Devices->MIDI Device Manager and clicked "Install Device". I found the Alesis SR-16 under that menu and then selected the Output as my MIDISPORT Uno Out.
At this point, I can try adding an Instrument Track. If I select the SR-16 as my instrument, I get this message:
"This mixer configuration expected "SR-16" to have Output 1:Stereo,
-> The instrument currently has Output 1: Mono,
-> The instrument channel will be silent."
This of course produces no audio when I arm the track and hit record.
Instead, I can make a MIDI Track. I do this, set All MIDI Inputs and either MIDISPORT Uno Out or the SR-16 Out, arm and record. I get no MIDI data this way either. I don't see the monitor show any input at any point either.
I have never setup a MIDI input before and I could be missing something basic. To debug this, I downloaded MIDI-OX. I can hit buttons on the SR-16 and I get MIDI data looking like this:
00006AEF 2 5 90 26 7F 1 D 2 Note On
00006AEF 2 5 90 26 7F 1 D 2 Note Off
00006CD7 2 5 90 24 7F 1 D 2 Note On
00006CD7 2 5 90 24 7F 1 D 2 Note Off
etc.
So this seems to confirm that the drum machine is getting data through the MIDI to USB and into software. Can someone please give me some suggestions on how I can either setup Cubase 5 or determine why I'm not getting audio into Cubase?
Thanks in advance.
