Ok so I'm using cubase 4 and recording via an m-audio usb fast track (not the pro) .

I also use the fast track as my soundcard for playback because while my laptop can manage it isn't very ASIO friendly. I'm recording some pretty simple heavy metal fodder so I'm just running a midi track for drum kit from hell and then multiple audio track for various guitar parts (6 audio tracks so far so not massive amounts) using amplitube.

up to the 3rd or 4th audio track playback was fine. But now when i playback/record its skipping and crackling and popping all over. Even muting certain tracks doesn't sort it but when i actually mix down to mp3 its all there and plays back in a media player perfectly.

What can i do?

My 2 guesses that are probably what's going on:

Your asking your hard drive to do to much (and laptop hard drives are usually 5200rpm vs. 7200rpm).

Your buffer settings are to low and you need to raise it.

Now you mention it i have burnt out 2 hard drives in about 6 months. Could this be the cause and is there a cheap practical solution?
