I'm preparing to mic a show where there will be multiple tables where conversation will be highlighted throughout the performance. I am looking at using PZM microphones top do the job of capturing the conversations but I'm at a loss as to which microphone has a better track record or performance behind it.

The Audio Technica 871R and the Crown PZM30 both sell for the same amounts and can be had second hand. Anyone have experience with these?

Other ideas maybe for the initial capture of the conversation at the tables? Remember there will be a band behind them performing at different times. I do not believe that there will be overlap so I can turn the gain down on the tables when not needed, but there might be instances where a little background conversation would be desired before bringing to the "FRONT" audibly. ..So descretion and rejection would be nice.

the pzm's will not only pick up the conversation at the tables but also all of the background noises including the band playing, probably even better then an ordinary mike in the same spot.

Just keep in mind that with either one you're not going to be able to get much gain before feedback - If you can buss them to the same group and insert at 31-band graphic, you'll appreciate it later.
