Did some recording last weekend with some friends of mine, wanted to get some critic on this mix before I let them hear it:

I like it mostly. I love the gritty guitars. Bass sounds cool. The singer sounds convincing. The levels are pretty good. The drums are kind of weird. Too much isolation. That intro section where it's just floor tom sounds unnatural. Are these sample replaced drums?

The performance and the energy is great. The drums sound a little flat to me...particularly the snare...almost like the snares aren't "on" if that's the right way to say that (I'm not a drummer...lol). Anyway, if I was mixing this I'd be tempted to try to trigger in a sample underneath the snare part to try to bring a little more crack to the snare. That might be just me though.

Overall, I think this sounds authentic and pretty rockin. Nice!

Wow, that's a lot of cymbal bashing way over on the side.
Sound like modern punk - bass tone is nice.
It works, well done!

Very good... The intro bass reminds me of the Violent Femmes (which is good).

I like the drums... really dry and hard... but they don't sit quite right with the rest of the ensemble. Everything else sounds a bit distant by comparison. With the overall mix working so well the obvious thing to do is to work the drums to fit, but I would be tempted to at least experiment with getting everything else to fit the "in your face" attitude of the drums. A harder less fuzzy bass is where I would start... just as an experiment mind you... :)

Thanks for all the comments! I reworked the drums slightly, have a listen:

Fuck that's subtle Toogy, or perhaps I've had too much beer to hear the difference :)

Second mix is definitely better. The snare sounds less... "boxy" I think is the word Du-jour.

I think the vocal's fine. You've got kind of a faux Jello Biafra thing going on.

The cymbals are still a bit overwhelming. And Soundcloud's compression was not kind to them.

Guitar and bass sound pretty alright.

I'll leave the mix comments to the experts. Just wanted to say Cool song and I enjoyed the listen.

How do you know it's pho? Maybe it could be some real Jello Biafra.

If your pho has the consistency of Jello, you should really revisit your recipe!

He doesn't sound exactly like other Biafra recordings I've found, so I'd guess it's not really him. However, if he was, that would be cool.

I looked up Jello the other night after listening to this track and listened to quite a lot of his newer stuff. I didn't realize how active he still was as a performer.

I didn't know for example that he'd teamed up with the Melvins (Jellvins) around 2005. There were some cool live vids out there from that period. He's an interesting character.

Thanks for all the replies and feedback! And I assure you it is NOT Jello Biafra on this recording! It's just a band that I've played some shows with in Southwestern Ontario. They are called The Mad Murdocks and this is their facebook page

The drums still sound super muffled like you laid a velvet cloth over your drum set. Could you find a treble peak somewhere on your snare especially to bring up a bit? ..Or a lot?

I understand singers sing how they sing, but when he's repeating 'you' over and over it kind of sounds like a small, angry dog barking. Maybe if he added some Melissa-Cross-esque grit to his voice, a little tiny bit more screaminess, it might go over better.

You can get a plugin to slightly alter the shape of your throat, for instance so that it sounds screamier. AVOX from Antares is one good option. You even just use the plugin to hear all the ways your voice COULD sound with just a little bit of tweaking, find something that sounds great that you like, then work to emulate it in real life. Just a thought.

JJ.

Nice song ;) Some old school punk in here and old school mixing that i personnally think fits the style.
Sometimes the cymbals are a bit loud. The kick could be also down some 2 dBs but i think the mix is almost good.
