FALKEN

*************************
so, I've been tracking this week, and I am getting a strange harmonic on the guitar track. straight power chords (R5) sound as though there is a major 3rd added on the top! But none was played! Now I normally play through a fuzz box but haven't had this problem before...I am wondering if this is an effect of going to tape too hot....is this possible?

Not that I have the answer but I've heard something like you describe on a pretty worn set of heads and tape path.

GO WITH IT MAN, FINISH THE ALBUM THAT WAY

Then when it starts BLOWING MINDS people will be begging for worn heads to get "that sound". Leaving their machines on all night while they sleep trying to get an "authentic" worn head sound. People caught wearing their heads down by any means other than traditional tape wear will be called "posers".

Its just like record scratching. In the old days it was a fuck up, now there are music styles that cant seem to live without that "ree-uh-ree-uh" sound every two beats.

well, its supposed to sound all hard core and shit, but instead its all "happy chords".... it actually sounds pretty lame.

The world needs more, "happy chords."

Harmonic distortion can do funny things, especially if your playing full chords through a fuzz box. You might also be overloading the electronics of the deck rather than the tape itself.

That's funny. I know what you're saying when the major 3rd is added. It doesn't work for some heavy songs. Did you figure out what it is yet?

not yet; one other thing is I had the guitars set up before we started recording and even though I asked the guy not to mess with the action he dropped it anyway, on all of the guitars and the bass, and now the strings have fret buzz, I hope its not this but that would be an easier fix than re-tracking all of the guitars at a new level with a lower S/N ratio....

Here's an easy fix:

Don't play all hardcore and shit. Play good music! :D

Hey FALKEN, if you dont mind my asking, what recording equipment do you own/use the most?

right now I am using an otari 5050 MKIII 8-track. Its sounding pretty sweet.
