Ok, part 2...

B.SAB - thanks for listening man, I always appreciate your comments! You know I think that synth got turned up because I remember it being back a little bit. That's what I get for screwing with things at the last minute.

Gidge - thanks bud!

Track - do you know what was booming? Was it the synth sound or the vocals? It doesn't boom here, but I've only heard it on a couple different systems.

Dobro - thank you very much. This one can't go anywhere else though! Yeah I have heard emeric's last two sunday songs and think they're great, especially the last one.

badgas - I've got about 15 minutes done...only 30 to go! :)

chrisharris - Thanks a lot. The swelling is just a synth...a VSTi synth actually - The Cheese Machine. One of my fav's!

jamal - there's no trick. I uses MP3.COM's B2B audio hosting service...it is possible that it was down for a while or something, try again!

fender - thanks!

jake-owa - Yep, that's where I was going with it. Thanks a lot for listening!

Guernica & chrisharris - the vocals were done like this:

- The main vocal is a V67 into an ART Tube MP. Totally a scratch take that ended up being better than my "real" takes. In fact, the mic was still setup for acoustic guitar (i used a V67 and a 603 for the acoustic) and I just sort of hunched over and sang into it as a guide. I used Freeverb2 on it with about a 50% lowpass (not sure what that translates to in terms of frequency cutoff because it doesn't tell you).

- The main vocal "effect" worked like this: I cloned the main vocal track and ran it through a lowpass and then a resonant filter to get that sort of strange sound (prosonique's northpole ... my favorite plugin). Then I manually offset the track by a few seconds so that the end phrases in the effected track would fall between the phrases of the main vocal track.

- The "whispered" vocals are two takes whispering into an SM57 at close range (used a pop filter of course).

ok i got it finally.....very cool...pinkfloyd/nirvana/slackmaster2000..i really like this too short ?..naaa...it says it all . its perfect...i really like the really quiet background doubled vox.....man this is cool...

jamal

I was curious 'cause I'm going through a similar thing with my own vocals. I can't track vocs with anyone around either. I can listen to playback with someone in the room, but I sure won't solo the vocs. I don't always cringe like I used to. At least that's getting better. I've tried a few pieces without vocal layers and with the voice way out in front with limited success, so I know how tough that is.

Very nice. I third/fourth the comments on Floyd and Roger Waters.

That great stuff slack! Short, but that's cool. Sometimes there is nothing else to say in a song. What you were saying got conveyed in that time space, and very well I should add.

That reso sound is kinda neat, overwelming on the bass side though. What is that, some type of VST instrument?

The vocals are very upfront, which is cool, but I'd say they are just a bit too upfront. Bring them back a bit, maybe 4dB.

All in all, fantastic!

Ok, I backed the synth off by 3db. It's still going to sound really big but that's ok, I don't think it's as distracting anymore.

"If you didn't care....what happened to me...."
Very Floydian, but somehow distinct!I must return to your site for more!Sounds wonderful!

imalion - cobain I am not, but thanks for listening!

jamal - thanks! glad you got it to work!

pglewis - yeah it really sucks trying to sing in front of people. It would sure make my life easier though...having to take time off of work to track vocals when nobody is here.

chessrock - thanks a lot!

emeric - thanks! That's the Cheese Machine!

beezelbubba - yeah I've gotten "floydish" comments before...they must've had more of an impact on me than I thought, because it's definately not intentional! If anything I was trying to rip off sparklehorse! :)

good....

but too short. :p

The recording was great.... the song, or what there was of it, was good... but I think I woulda liked it more if it had "gone" somewhere... like a lazy drum beat comes in and you get a chorus or somethin'.. I dunno... but for what it is... it's good. I don't really have any mix comments.

WATYF

sounds good, and everyone seems to like it, so I guess I'd be the prick if I didn't but....... but... but... ..I liked it ..

seems like you are getting the lets-eat-the-mic sound...and there is some resonance that might make some stereo systems wimper a bit....but it sounds good on phones.

so...ya'll crawl with ants in Montana?.....no dental floss tycoons?

I'm gonna toss off an obscure reference--Skip Spence "Oar". There is a flavor of that here. Vocal through the Tube MP and V67 is really good--so much so that I'm about ready to be convinced that all this big high dollar pre-amp talk is just a lot of hot air following wasted money! (ah, I'll change my mind in a week or two when g.a.s. kicks in again). At any rate, your vocal sound is audio proof that the Tube MP is not "garbage" nor is the V67 a "cheap sounding" Chinese mic.

I really dug the vocal effect. In my psychologically twisted mind it came across like how the ants would "hear" the voice. Kind of a bell jar kind of perception. I thought you took a delay line and put it through a real lo-fi processor of some kind.

You know what this song is? Its like a mini movie! Well, several scenes anyway. Unique and more than meets the eye.

You are good. You ought to be writing more!

Very good! I really liked the vocal style-sounded sincere......i like the bass swell it seemed to jump out of the guitar at first--cool background vocal sounds-just at the right volume to really suck you into the mix-and It was still hard to tell it was a voice-I had to listen 5 times to be sure...Boy this is short..I keep having to go back to your site to listen heh. An enjoyable listen-going back to check out your other stuff..

I already told you in a separate forum that this had too much reverb but the basic tune was very cool. I'll stand by that.

so...ya'll crawl with ants in Montana?.....no dental floss tycoons

........now there's a cover i would like to hear!!!!!

thanks for the informative explanation of the vocal effects slack.
.....Im gonna mess with that.

great stuff

Heh... a semi-sarcastic approach... kind of like Crash Test Dummies--serious sounding music, with goofy lyrics... dig that mucho. (I've tried to write similar songs, but it's very tough... nice job...)

Into the farmer's pants, eh? Heh :p That vocal mic doesn't sound bad... better than some SM-58 vox I've heard...

Good job, master of Slack

-Master of Bait

hey, thats a really smooth sounding mic your using. You get a nice clean , big, and up front sound, very natural. I like the piece, a string of them would be great, kina like a "ok lets relax for a sec with this tune"

monty - and i thought you were just an old fart?

WATYF - I knew some people would feel that way. :) Thanks for listening!

mixmkr - lately the "let's eat the mic" sound is something I've really come to appreciate....it can be very intimate. (I just wish I liked my own voice more)

crawdad - wow, thank you very much!

stratomaster - thanks for listening my fellow master. I wish I had more good stuff to offer at my site....

doc - you're just trying to get back at me for telling you to use MORE reverb! :) haha

participant - yeah...and odd reference to that old game "ants in your pants"...of course those ants didn't crawl, they were catapulted. Hehe. The V67 is an ok mic...nice & gritty.

Toki - thanks a lot. I am happy with how the vocal turned out overall...but I was going for something bigger. That was the best I could do in such a short time (I wrote the song last week and spent about 8 hours recording producing & mixing)
