I just got a Crate powerblock for Christmas and I love the tone. I would like to try and record with it direct without using any speakers.According to the
Block diagram when the headphones are plugged in, the speakers are still active and they us a different stage in the amp. I always heard that running an amp with no load is hard on the amp. Has anyone had experience with this?

Thanks !

You need a load with tube amps, not solid state. Recording direct with a solid state amp is fine, there should be an output jack for it.

Be sure that you do not go direct out from the speaker output. That would be bad. Line out or, if it has it, DI out.

When I looked at the stats for these, I noticed that the power ratings were for a fairly high thd percentage...

this means that unwanted solid-state distortion will creep in fairly quickly as you begin to push the amp.

So when recording, just make sure you're not pushing it too hard, and that tone you like will come through ok.

Cheers, Joe
