you almost snuck this one by me

I just want to point out that you are very brave to cover what is perhaps the single most important song in modern jazz.

Very good mix.

Great use of drum machine.

I like the "horns".

Very 70's guitar.

I hate your punk-ass piano solos!

Awesome bass playing. The whole thing is kind of a bass solo, actually. Creative lines, rhythms are perfect (as far as I'm capable of telling), beautiful tone (even on my shitty speakers). I have got to get you to play bass with me (think of my "Emily's Song" with a funk feel; it would work).

Thx guys!

Slim-bo-Hahahahahaha! Yeah you're rite about the piano solos!
I'm afraid if I start 1 of those speedy key runs,I'm bound to hit an off-key note or 2, hence my controlled whole and half note hits.
Also, this was basically a free-for-all bass riff party to just excercise my fingers! If you were to hear most f my jammies,I always somehow or anutha' just make the bass practically the lead and every other instrument become 2nd fiddle.
You're funny!!:D :D :D

all this track needs is hayes voice to be complete.

FUNK ON.

Thx CJ. "Black Moses", A.K.A. Isaac Hayes is one of my fave producer, arranger and musician of the "Blaxploitation Movie"
soundtrack era in the '70's!

This is a "most excellent" jam, Q!

Sounds like it could've been from an episode of Starsky & Hutch.

"Huggy Bear's Theme" ;)

Loved it!.... Loved it!.... Luuuuuuuuved it! :)

Weellll...
ALLRIGHT QUE!

Great soft Bass tone, killer bass playing.'

And having jammed with Que personally, I can tell you...
This man is a SERIOUS Bass Player.

As a drummer, you KNOW I hate that 35 cent cymbal sound, but it was put well in the mix.

And you are a better keyboard player than Ringo. ;)

I like the wah-wah, too. I agree I would have mixed it panning left to right.

But cool song, Que...

Makes me want to walk Woodward Avenue with a long mink stole, a White derby with a blue feather in it, green poyester pants, blue snakeskin platform shoes, and an ivory walking cane
all the while swigging from a bottle of T.J. Swann....

Post some more!

:D

QQ, you da bomb on da four (or five, or six) string mutha f^cka . When do we get a taste of George Clinton and all his funky friends? Really fun stuff Q. Ya gotta love it... ...I'm all funked up as we speak:D . Tom

BTW Q-Man, Have you gotten my e-mails about the reunion???

I actually like the drums, not the sounds, but the rhythms.

Did you programme them yourself, if so, what software?
or, if it's a sample cd -- which CD?

good job....

by the way, i'm as jelous as sin for that bass playing!

Nahhh! Me no use no c/d samples! Me uses the Boss DR 202
Dr Groove drum machine. I wrote that pattern into it's internal
"user" bank!

Thx T of langley,FMmahogany(yes, I got your private message,
I'll reply when i get home from work!) !

You da man Q, I use to mess around with a few of Herbie's classics and your killa jam has inspired me to revisit some of the maiden voyage era standards.First though ,I am going to fire up the rhodes and maybe a tassman minimoog and have some fun jammin with your kick a-- bass groove. Thanks,Keith

no offense mate but as a Herbie Hancock fan I think you could have been more inventive and creative. Your bass playing is awesome (it's walking, it's grooving) but sorry IMO the whole brass section is pure midi crap and it does not pay a tribute to HH's original version at all. But I don't usually like MIDI-faked lead instruments anyway...

Just a suggestion :
let me guess the limit you had : you could not record a whole brass section for this one (because you simply don't have one / don;t have the facility to record one !!) but instead of trying to recreate the whole thing with a MIDI keyboard why not trying to experiment with synths/filters/effects and make a totally different version of the thing ?

Herbie Hancock once did a cover of Cantaloupe Island with synthesizers and electric gear (guitars, etc.) and although you can recognize the original tune it does sound totally different from the original, while he did not try anything to recreate the trumpet lead sound with his synths...

Just thoughts...

I hope this did not make you upset about me. If it did then go and check my other post (about my mp3s) and leave me some flaming posts !! :-)

Thx Oliver! 1st, I use absolutely no MIDI for brass!! Just a Yamaha
keyboard run thru a Zoom 505 (it has only 1 useable patch which I use for creating a horn section). It is just a basic simple horn line
nuttin' fancy, and not intended to be the focus of the jammy! I just decided to this cover as an EXCUSE to run my fingers up and down my bass! It's basically a simple,half-@ssed fun with the bass and wah! Nothing more or nothing less!
But thankyou for your observation!
Peace
MrQ

OK cool if that was for bass playing only, then it's fair enough :-)

like I said about ya bass playin : it's grooving , walking and all.
you rock the house no question about it.

O.
