ok, Musicians friend (yeah right) catalog came yesterday and is full of great looking 2 grand $99 mics, copy cat styles i guess, so, which one works er... ok, for the money... (lower priced please) not going on the road use, studio/booth use...

i can't just drop a grand on a mic, and surely don't need another screwing from MF, been there, done that...tia

zzound rules anyway, no flame intended...

I guess the point is that a number of them work ok for the money...........some exceptionally well.

But ideally, you should if possible, get to a dealer that has a variety and try different mics.........if you can't do that, then find an online dealer who has a fair and reasonable return policy...........get 1 or 2 mics, try them out at home and return whatever isn't suitable.

Fortunately or unfortunately, it is your ears that have to be happy with your choice and no one can do that for you.

PS........DJL is right........pretty ones always sound nicer:D

Anybody who doesn't own a Marshall V67 at $90 makes me go "hmmmm"

sheesh, are weekends always for trols here? never mind...
And here I thought the weekends were for people who ask questions before reading the board to see if their question has been asked and answered 9999999999999999999999999999999999999999999999 times before. Sorry for the smartass answer but sheesh, what do you want the mic for... vocals, drums, guitar, piano, horms, or what?

ditto, I paid almost $200 for my v67 and it is easily worth that much so less than $100 is a friggin steal......

Gidge, you seem like a big fan of the V67. I have read a number of your post extolling it's virtues. I was wondering if you could tell me how you use it to record acoustic guitar. I have found it a bit harsh for this purpose, although I like it for vocals.

I used my spanking new V67 in a seesion today. I had been using a B1 previously on the singer, and from what I'd read I thought that this mic would work better on her vocals. Well, it did. I must saythat for the asking price it is a great mic to have around. I can see that it wouldn't work for all singers though, but at the price its great.

morindae, it's not just the mic you have to consider. Stick a bright mic on a cannon of a guitar and it can really bring out the high end (in a good way). Stick a bright mic on a bright guitar and you can get a headache. Sometimes the mic just doesn't match the guitar. Also, the V67 has a reputation as a good rock/country vocal mic but not as an acoustic guitar mic. You're better off using the MXL603s or MC012 on acoustic. I hear the SP B1 is also good on acoustic. All of these mics run about $80.

I like the V67 on acoustic...it has more high end than the 603. I've used them together with some success.

morindae,

in the RARE event im un-lay enuff to pull out the mics for acoustics, i use the v67 out in front of the guitar usally about 12 inches to 18 inches pointed at the 12th fret or so......i also use a behringer ecm8000 directly over my sounder pointed out in front of the guitar.....i also use the direct signal....betwen all3 i get what i need......

of course, the key is going to be finding the position right for your room/guitar/playing....as with miking all acoustic instruments, placement makes a words of difference......

just curious though, what preamp are you using?......

well, the only real expensive mic's being copied are for vocals, i don't believe a $29 for 3 deal counts there, not for me anyway, and forgive my ignorance where mic's are concerned i'm not a singer but would like a mic for the studio... and reading 999999999999999999999999999999 post over the weekend Kinda displaces my time a little bit :) thanks for the input though...

you'll have to excuse my vagueness, there are some pretty looking pieces of junk in the new catalog i expect and at least i know where to ask for help/info, this forum is very informative as far as i've seen, i play the guitar but have spent the last year or so dealing with instrument recording and not so much vocals as i am just starting into mastering so the move is needed now...

all i know is the shure m57 and 58, but times have changed and there's new more viable solutions for recording endevors today then ever before, along with them comes the junk dealers, been there, done that, years ago...again, thanks everyone...

That mastering stuff sounds interesting is it easy to do? do i need a computer?

QUOTE:......."well, the only real expensive mic's being copied are for vocals,"

That ain't necessarily so.........a number of the newer, cheaper range of Asian sourced mics do very well on instruments in addition to vocals..........it just depends on the sound source as to whether a particular mic will be suited or not and that can apply to ANY mic regardless of price, quality or country of origin.

You haven't said whether it is acoustic or electric you want to record, so it isn't really feasable to take this any further at this stage.

I'd like to congratulate MiXitG for having the funniest post (the one asking about mastering) in this thread so far. Thank you for the smile.

I'd also like to revive my old stock answer from my previous screen name when I relocated last fall and lost like a thousand posts. To the question, "Which microphone?", I still say:

That one, over there. No, the one on the left!

It's as true today as it was then.

Should I get a car or a truck and what's the best color? LOL :D

Fusion2, picking a vocal mic is kind-of like picking a girl friend... and I'm not being a smartass with this answer.

Gidge, I'm using the Audio Buddy or the preamp in my Behringer UB802 mixer. I am recording a Takamine N-10, which is a bright sounding guitar with a red cedar top. I have found that my Audio Technica ATM63 going into the Audio Buddy is so far the best combination. I have a feeling that tdukex is correct. My guitar doesn't match my mic.

PS. Fusion2. sorry for posting this question in your thread. I responded to Gidge's post without thinking.
