Crackle/half-second missing during record?

What might be causing me to lose a half or quarter second during recording? I'm only using a single track at a time so far, and have a gig of ram, and a 3GHz notebook (using Audition 1.5).

Do I need to change my latency settings on my Firebox? Any other suggestions?

Thanks... I'm still very new to this.

What kind of computer are you using? I found that on my brand new Dell D610 which is a dual core 2.2ghz and 1gb ram, i had a pop every 80 seconds or so when using my firebox. I started to play around with the hardware settings, and finally figured that it was the PCI bridge that was giving me problems. After disabling the on-board soundcard and wifi, my popping spanned out to once every 130 seconds or so. This is using a SIIG pcmcia firewire adapter. This wasn't cutting it, so I have since made my buddies come over to my house and use my 2.4 ghz p4 with 1gb ram desktop. I have a belkin firewire pci firewire adapter installed there and have not had any problems since. I am a Network Administrator in my day job, so I know a thing or two about computer hardware and laptops are notorious for sharing resources across different hardware bridges. I have determined that this is the problem with my laptop. Before I bought the $50 belkin firewire adapter for my desktop, I was seriously flirting with the idea of buying a mac. I am glad I bought the adapter!!!! I hope this helps a little.

Is it really a gap, or a display problem? I was recording tracks with 2.0 the other day and the waveform was disappearing every so often. Then the screen would refresh and the whole thing would be there. No idea what that's about.

Gap is AUDIO not graphical & brief - possibly solved

The gaps are very brief... maybe 1/4 to half second.
I'm not positive, but I might have fixed the problem by:

1. turning off the notebook PC's wifi (weather some background updates were being done, or maybe just the CPU's time devoted to monitoring the connection)

2. disabling Norton while recording (which makes turning off the wifi esp. wise to do to prevent any hacking).

I have another question I'll post in a new or more approp. topic on shortcuts.
THanks,

Internal hard drives on notebooks are REALLY slow.

Probably the crackle and the gap is due to the drive not being able to keep up with the amount of data you are trying to push in and out of it at the same time.

Solution: External Firewire Drive To Record To...

(I use a Glyph GT050 with zero problems on my XP notebook. Some people say they are too expensive ($200) but they are very fast and dead silent; worth every penny to me. I've had no problems recording to mine.)

Already using Glyph ext. drive & Firebox (w/firewire)

Oh Timothy, sorry I neglected to say, I am already using the hardware you recommend. Also, I think I opted for the 7200rpm hard drive when I bought my HP zd8000. Damn, they've changed the zd8000 to the dv8000 and dropped the price hundreds since I bought mine around Xmas.

Thanks for the reply though. Hopefully shutting down all network and antivirus activity will prove to be reliable as a fix (unless I can have my cake and eat it too/get it to work flawlessly WITH wifi and antivirus running).

My notebook/laptop runs SO HOT, the fan is fairly loud and constantly running. Have you ever built an isolation box, or do you just deal with the fan noise?
