Hey all,

Im running an M-Audio Delta 1010LT. into Sonar 4. but one problem i keep getting is when ever i hit around the 4 or 5 track mark when recording, say the 5th track would then have like a cracking noise the whole way through it. its driving me mad!. I've tryed a cheaper freeware recorder and aint getting any problems. Just seems to be in Sonar.

One last question, what exactly is latency?
Any help would be great

Thanks =)

latency occers when your cpu is processing the audio. the more plugins being used the more work the cpu has to do and the greater the latency. you have buffers that ensure that the audio stream is flowing steady. the bigger the buffer the more latency. and you probably need to increase your buffer size cause the crackling may be your buffer is too small. how ever this will increase the the lag. there will always be latency. even on the faster system. but its so small on faster system you dont notice it. If you have a fast system then you can decrease the buffer size for less lag.

I've been thru all these "crackilng" world too long... Hear me now :D

1. Go to Windows control panel --> System --> Hardware --> Device Manager. View Resource by type. Click IRQ. Make sure you don't share your Delta IRQ with other devices in your system. Change if so, it should occupy it's own IRQ! If you can't change it's IRQ, then the worst is to find another empty PCI slot, and move the Delta there. Check the IRQ in Windows again...

2. What's the chipset of your motherboard? If it's Via, then install latest Hyperion driver BEFORE you install the card!

3. For better perfomance, run dual 7200RPM HD (two phisycal HD drive). Connect 'em on different IDE channel! Many story about advantage of running dual HD drive! Set the first one for OS & programs, and 2nd HD for recording audio (projects).

4. Update your VGA driver!

5. Set latency from Delta's control panel. Try 512 or higher.

6. Don't run anti virus etc. while recording! Shut 'em down. They sometime intend to interupt the signal.

7. Etc...

Well, FYI, here's installation procedure I recommend when you do fresh install :

  • Open your CPU, remove any PCI device except your VGA card.
  • Install OS BEFORE you snap anything on PCI slot!
  • Done? Install drivers for your motherboard & stuff (IDE driver, LAN, USB driver, etc...). The driver usualy comes with your motherboard, or download them.
  • After every mobo driver installed, turn off your computer, and install your soundcard. Pick empty PCI the most far from AGP slot. Turn on computer, install it's driver. Check the IRQ. Move when necessary as stated above.
  • Once it's sat on it's own IRQ, start installing the rest PCI card. Keep an eye on IRQ!

Good luck! :)

When i dropped my buffer size to 1.0 msec. It seemed to kill off the crackling, This the right thing to do?

Right thing? Could be :)

Do some trial and error before actualy make some serious recording... :) If you happy... then there you go :)

What driver mode are you using? (Options --> Audio --> Advanced tab --> Playback & Recording). Use either WDM or ASIO!

At the moment its set to WDM/KS.
Thanks for all your help :)
