Go for it!

If you are totally concerned about sound - don't do it.

I think whatever you can do to make your guitar different and totally your's, it's worth trying.

I had one of those cheap-o pickups that you stick on with a wad of gummy stuff - Ran it into my Tascam. It was a totally different guitar sound than when I recorded with a $300 condenser mic. I would guess that very thin paper on the sound board (that's essentially part of the finish) would have very little effect on the overall sound.

A lot of those rosette things around the sound holes are simply decalls. And if it's real wood, then each different design would have some subtle effect on sound as well.

The woods on the vast majority of acoustic guitars are machined in some kind of automated system. So given the differences in density, etc. across the same species, you would never get EXACTLY the same sound the original designer heard.

Have fun and Be original! That's what music is all about anyway, isn't it?!?!?!?!?!

oh the humanity

on my kramer i cut out naked ladie pics(classy ones from the 50s monroe, betty page that kind of stuff) and hodgepodged(an acrylic clear for puzzles and arts and crafts) them on it and resprayed the clear 15 coats with wet sanding every 5 to smooth it back out still sounds the same but looks a hell of a lot cooler!! man its your guitar do what you think is best, dont let anybody who doesnt even finish one therselves tell you no different. If i had a highend gibson lespaul or something i wouldnt have done it but i dont so fuuuuuuuuug it!!!! That reminds me when i was a kid we would get those temperary tattoos and put them on our axes! it would last longer than you think and when you got tired of it a warm rag would get it off!

gvarko that wood burning stuff is awesome by the way!!!

But you are talking about an electric, not an acoustic. What he is doing will make a MUCH bigger difference in the sound, as it is an acoustic. Now, it is his guitar, and he can do what he wants. What I can tell you though is that, in terms of resale, what he is doing makes his guitar a total loss, and there is no way to undo it.
