I've been on this board for a while now, and would have liked to have posted some of mixes for you to hear, but I wasn't sure if it would be Ok to post cover tunes due to copyrights..etc...

Is it Ok to post cover tunes here, or do they have to be original?

Thanks in advance,

Sure go ahead, people do it all the time ;)

Yeah, you get flamed sometimes, but lots of people still like cover tunes.

(IMO), the people who cry most about posting cover tunes and copyright are frustrated songwriter types who have not "made it", but by "stealing" from some known successful artist, they feel you're somehow also "stealing" from them.

(IMO), There's a mentality that all songwriting and songwriters are a monolith, and by covering tunes as experimental nonprofit home recording, you're somehow "stealing" from them all. No matter that maybe it's a Paul McCartney tune, and the person making the most noise about it is "Average Joe Wannabee" frustrated songwriter from "Anytown, USA". Fact is, people wanna cover Paul McCartney's songs, and they don't care about "Average Joe's" original songs.

(IMO), The whole thing about cover tunes used for experimental nonprofit home recordings being "song stealing" is an argument of dubious merit, and to me represents the overreaching, grasping, greedy hand of the music industry out of control with their own power, and nothing else. It's only "piracy" if there is illegitimate monetary gain from it, otherwise it's just someone cryin' over sour grapes.

I guess that's enough inflammatory comments for one post!

I like doing covers, cuz it shows how terrible I really am... :D

Ah, I don't mind paying mechanical license fees... We've laid out over $5K in the past 3 months... Just that the particular tune I wanted to post, we didn't have a mechanical license for... Ah, I guess it'll be Ok... I mostly didn't want to get flamed here by the 'anti-piracy' folks...

Just trying to keep my nose clean! :D

Mechanical license is required for publishing actual cds,...

but I don't think it covers i'net access for downloadable and streamable content.

Music on the i'net is a fairly new area of copyright law, that publishing agencies are still trying to come up to speed on. Harry Fox Agency has a "New Media Licence" that's supposed to cover internet downloading of copyrighted songs. It's also different depending on the publisher, and IMO the whole framework of copyright for the i'net is still in a state of flux. They basically want the statutory rate (19¢) for every download or stream.

I think they're crazy. The second I make any money from downloads, streams or cds of my own experimental home recording of cover songs, then I'll register and pay. Until then, the powers that be can eat me!

Streaming or downloading of commercial content by named artists of commercially available recordings is of course another story, which I'd agree is stealing.

Experimental non-profit home recording of covers? Not stealing.

Ooops! I said it was already enough inflammatory comments. There I go again!

That's just my opinion. I don't expect it to be held as gospel truth, or that anyone would necessarily agree with me.

Cheers!

Experimental, non-profit home recording of covers? Not stealing.

Yeah, I'm sure our mechanical licenses don't cover internet downloads... Actually we, the band, don't own them anyways our label does... So it really wouldn't have made much difference either way... I guess, since I'm not making money off this tune, it's just a 'mix test' basically where I tried a new EQ, much won't be said I guess...

Basically, I just didn't want flamed here for posting a cover song/something I didn't own..etc.. Wasn't sure how the board felt about it... I've posted it, and I'll leave it up and get some comments (hopefully), then I'll remove it just to be safe...

Thanks!

I certainly don't have any problem with it.

I'm sure there are other heads on this board who would disagree with what I've said, and they're welcome to it, but it doesn't change my basic opinions. I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it. This thread's not about me, though.
