Hi guys. Some quick mr8 questions.

1) Does Cakewalk allow you to mixdown and edit WAV files (EQ, add drum loops) and can N-track do the same? I'm not sure which program would be best for what function. Would I need any other components to work with these programs?

2) For drum loops/programmed percussion, would those little Dr Rhythm or Alesis drum machines need to be on a separate track (mr8) or is it better to import those into a program and mix them there?

I'm still relatively new at recording, so I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

programs

i know n track works great havent tried the other, but if it uses .wav files it sould work as well as any other program...

Cakewalk and Ntrack should do all those functions your looking for. As for your drums. If you are using an external multitracker(MR8) then importing to pc, I'd put my drums tracks there first with the rest of my tracks. Most software can mix each track seperately. If you want to use your software for looping etc.. you can always record straight to pc, create a .wav of your drum pattern and overdub on your pc or export your .wav back to MR8 and do your overdubbing there. Look at past threads on importing and exporting wav files. As well as other useful info. Good luck. Pj

I would record the drums onto the MR8. This will ensure that you maintain your timing for other tracks if you to be exporting more tracks.

I hold my drums on the MR8 until I finish every other track that I am working on. I export tracks then record more on top of the other and export them. Sometimes I get up around sixteen tracks or so. But I maintain my basic tracks for timing.

If using the DR 770 I recomend reording it in stereo. The drums sound more real.

timing

i find it easier to export all the tracks to the pc, mix and add effects, then from the pc you mix down a single mono wav file at 16 bit 441 sampling rate with all current tracks on it, including drums, then erase all tracks on mr 8 and import the new single wav file containing all tracks, add new ones and repeat. that way you can hear the song building properly rather then depending on one old track as reference...

Thanks for your help, guys. I'm still learning about the recording process, so I'm sure I'll have some more questions later. You all seem to know your stuff. Thanks!
