A friend dropped by Saturday night and we spent about two hours recording him... He did all instruments and vocals. Just a quick session for fun.

Let me know what you think...

The tune is The Banks of the Ohio

Your friend is definitely the real deal man.........
That fella sounds like a young Ralph Stanley!

I'm not all that knowledgable when it comes to Bluegrass, so I don't know if this is an original or not.

The tune is perfect for this singer though.

Thanks very much for the listen.

hey HevyD47Ca, thanks for the listen...

I border on clueless when it comes to this music genre. If it's not really, really mainstream, I haven't heard it.

But, I know this is not an original tune, but I don't know anythig about it... never heard it before Saturday night.

thanks...

come on... I see some of you have listened... take a minute and shoot me some feedback.

thanks...

Sounds great. Nice job. Once again the vocals seem a touch thin. Usually in this kind of music you want the vocals pretty prominent.

As a former Bluegrass fanatic, raised in the moutains of WV, I can really appreciate this song.

For a Bluegrass mix, the guitar is too heavy, needs to be pulled back behind the vocals. The voice is fine. Bluegrass doesn't need to be in your face vocals.

Good job and thanks for sharing this.

Sounds pretty good, I would have appreciated a little change in the main vocal line, got a little boring but I guess it is a remake. Probably would have played it in a key lower as well. Guitar sounds nice, I like the tune itself, good job by your friend.

Thanks lynx...

He did move the key up to fit his range.

I liked it. can you tell us what the set up was for recording: mic, preamp, that kind of thing? I'd like to know what mic you used on the guitar and what kind of guitar he is playing. Sounds good, man.

hi 63falcon,

I'm not sure of the guitar make... I think it was an inexpensive Washburn.

I recorded the guitar using M+S with an NTK in the MID position and a 4050 in a Figure of 8. When not doubling the guitar, I use M+S. This way I can go mono or stereo at mix time.

The pre-amp is a Mackie-1604-VLZ.

The guitar is compressed some, maybe a bit too much.

Thanks for the listen and feedback.

I have just kinda got into bluegrass in the last year or so and for me the only thing I dont like is the guitar sounds like it needs to be warmed up just a bit. It just sounds a little harsh to me.
Other than that I like it all.

Hi Sonixx,

I did a bg for this one and will post it below. If you want the single track to remix, just let me know.

This one is FUN!!!!! :)

P.S. Sorry, timed out on the upload, so had to link it!

I agree with one former post... The guitar could be a little further back OR the vocals could come a little more up front.

Nice sounds, though... Very clean. Exceptional stereo imaging.

Great !!!

Were your acoustic plugged direct or mic'd ??
Hi Musart,

The guitar was mic'd in a M+S config... Check a few posts earlier where I described the method and mics.

Thanks...

Thanks Massive Master for the feedback,

Maybe when I get back home, business travel, I'll do another mix.

Thanks again...

Hi Prozkgrl,

Cool... I took a listen... pretty good.

If you like, go ahead and post the vocal somewhere and when I get home, I'll download it and mix it in for the next mix.

This will be fun...

Very nice job! I agree that the guitar should come down a bit in the mix. Would sound great with a mando and a bass in there!

I also like the added background vocals from Prozkgrl.

Thanks for posting...Bob.
