Is there such a thing as a coloured/eciting dynamic mic?
Something you could get for vocals super cheap on ebay?
Instead of bying one of those hyped mxl mics (never heard them), are there any dynamic/ribbon bargains out there?

And I don't like the sound of an sm57, or the sound of the vocals on "Tapestry". Or actually maybe i do, but I don't want that sound...Don't like a midrange sound...

You might give the Beyer M-88 a try. You'd probably like that one. Not as midrangy or peaky as a 57 ... kinda' scooped, almost, like a condenser. You might also give the Sennheiser MD-441 a spin. Nice mic.

Some of the Beyer ribbon mics can be really nice, but I don't know I'd call 'em "exciting." :D Might be stretching it, but definitely some nice ones worth having.

cheap dynamic

Check out a Audio Technica MB3000. You can usually find them cheap. Definite vocal peak. Not a rugged mic, but for some voices it works quite well.

The MB3000L suits my voice & piano players voice very well, I use it live in preference to the 58, beta58 and beta57. The tactile finish is not very hardwearing, both my 3000L's look distinctly shabby. I've been on the look out for a used m88 for a while but the prices are just too much. Just picked up a beyer soundstar on ebay, looking forward to trying that one.
