Hi,
I could really use a different set of ears :)
I've been reading and doing a lot of mixing tests over the last months trying to get the grip of it and I know there's a lot of room for improvement but between my partially damaged hearing and my personal bias it's impossible to keep going that way by myself :p
Could you send me some feedback regarding this mix?
Thanks in advance!

Sounds great on my shitty PC speakers... also nice tune.. I love prog! yeah man, put the whole song! :D

cheers

Sounds really good a little Zach in the guitar and a lot of Rudess in the keys ....post the rest of the tune.

Thanks for the feedback guys :)
I just wanted to check if I was on the right path. I think I found a synth that sits better in the mix :)
As soon as I'm done with it, I'll post the full version :D

The drums sound good except for some phase thing going on with the hi-hats. They sound scooped and unnatural.

Hmmm true... I'll be fixing that too
Thanks for the observation :)
I'll update the mix as soon as possible

For the most part it sounds really good. To me the drums seem flat/smothered and could use some space/air. A bit of room reverb and harder panning would help the drums to not sound so center stacked and bland.

Gutars are sitting on top of the drums and everything is squashed to hell. back off on the bus compression limiting and lets hear what that sounds like.

Thanks for the tip ocnor :)
Could you elaborate a bit on the panning? One of the things I've read is that snare and kick drum should be dead center, how do you approach the drums panning?

Look at a drum kit.

Bass Drum - Centre
Snare - Centre
Rack Toms - Slightly off centre
Floor Tom - Further off centre
Cymbols - All off centre.

Pan accordingly so if you were stood in front of the kit, you hear different hits in different places. Build a space for the drums to breathe and sound more natural. I'm no expert but panning drums can give you a better depth and sound.

Will proceed with this when I get home :) Thx Mr Clean!

I thought overall it sounded good. Good playing and mostly good guitar sounds. Bass sounded good.

The guitar in the intro, to me was a little heavy/muddy sounding.

Drums weren't bad, but the guitars are dominating them.

Yeah, sounds great, but it isn't a song. Not sure why you would go with a keyboard lead that sounds like it's trying to be a tapping guitar?

This mix is coming along nicely. (Keep in mind that not everyone here is listening in an ideal environment. It may sound different to each of them. Myself included.)

The only thing that really caught my attention was that the guitars seem louder than the drums. One trick I do is to turn down the monitors really really low, to the point where some instruments begin to disappear. Then you can get a better perspective of what is too loud and what is not. As you turn down the mix even further, the last thing to finally disappear is the loudest thing in the mix. Granted, you don't want everything to be the same volume, but this can at least give you a little more direction on what to adjust.

Keep up the good work. It really is a good mix overall. I didn't have a problem with the keyboard solo. I rather enjoyed it vs. guitar.

In music, being unique is a good thing.
