Recording Modus Operandi
For all you cats looking to score one of those jaw dropping speed Duo Cores for Christmas, you may want to wait until January when these processors are going to be released.

software aint gonna support 4 cores let alone 8 anytime soon, but with quad coming out it should push dual cores down in price which is when i will jump on dual core

um Quad cores are already released... Didn't you know that? They've been out a month or 2? Very expensive though, I think the model number they're using is QX6*** (QX6700/6800 etc). I was about to purchase one the other day but got other shit I gotta pay for first. The only one available right now is the QX6700 EE 2.66ghz, 8mb cache (2 x 4mb) kentsfield (dual conroe cores)

Once the switch to Vista comes along. The Quad cores are nothing more than 2 dual cores. A lot of the dual core enabled softwares, already have support for 2 dual cores. Each dual core will be able to be optimized.

AMD is releasing their version of the quad cores in a couple weeks.

Ive been testing the Core2 quads for several weeks with Sonar, Cubase, and Nuendo. I just completed testing yesterday on the dual Xeon quad system with the same software. All of those programs support 4 and even 8 cores with current builds available to anyone. We will be putting performance specs up shortly on my company website after we have compiled the data.

We currently have Core2 Quad systems available and are accepting Quad Xeon orders, which should be arriving here in about 2 weeks. So they're out there. And they are pretty amazing. But few people can really use the horsepower these things put out unless youre doing live recording and use live plugs and VSTi's with many tracks like using MADI cards.

Yeah I'm barely maxing out my old Pentium 4 3.0 GHz with 1 gig of RAM...upgrading to a MacBook Core 2 Duo with 4 MB L2 cache which should theoretically have around twice the processing power, and I can't see maxing that out unless some MAJOR plugs come around. Heck, even with the Waves SSL stuff, I was able to run 20 tracks plus a few reverb and compression plugs and still have steady playback at 32 bits.

Mixing the track down in two minutes would be really sweet though :D

Well that does it. I'm holding out for a 64-Core processor to run 64-bit software.

lol 64 cores to run 64 bit software? Well 64 bit softwares has already been implicated with all the 64 bit processors that flood the market already. 64 cores though, Intel designed a 32-core processor (128 bit??) codename Keifer already.
I'm waiting until they drop the 45nm processors next year. Those processors should be very very fast. I know the Harpertown will be available sometime in 2008 which features 4 or 8 cores (dual harpertowns) on 45nm (server). The Yorkfield processor (consumer) that also features 4 or 8 (dual Yorkfield) cores on 45nm will release around the same time... So these are the times that you'll need to really wait and get what you really want.

btw Intel has a experimental processor that has 80 Cores on a large die, that can perform at 1 teraflop per chip, and can transfer 1TB/S of data between the cores and have integrated SRAM structures on them.

I think we are talking about native quads which dont come out till next year. The current xtreme one is not a "true" quad, its just 2 duos on the same die so the caches are separate

i have no understanding of what ya'll are talking about or anything usefull to contribute.

i just wanted to point out that teraflop is a frickin hilarious word.

It's when a chip decides to flop around aimlessly lol

Oh ok. I thought you were talking about the current quad core. The cache are only seperated on 2 x 4mb 4 mb shared for each duo. Sure you knew that though.

"Teraflop," from the Latin, terra=earth, means to flop down on the ground, ie: "He stumbled and teraflopped."

Yeah, that is the drawback. The new quad xeon (X5355) will have 8 mb shared across the 4 cores and have the faster 1333 mHz FSB

How fast do you need your computers to be?

Mine's like 5 years old...1.2GHz AMD, that's really all I know about it.

How much of a diference would I notice with a Core Duo one?

it's not about clock speed anymore. I went from a HT 3.4 gHz Prescott to a 2.4 ghz core 2 duo and my track count went up times 5
