Hey guys, I had 2 songs I wrote the music to and had it all recorded. I ask a friend of mine over and he put down the lyrics. The songs are really cool. Every body thats heard the so far really like them. Now we want to copywite them. He wants to copyrite the words seperately and the music sep........ What do you guys think?

uuuuhhhhhhhhhhhhh..........all these copyright ???????????/ on this board............ I got nuthin but love for all you though......so Flash it can be done (which I guess you already know) but it sounds like he want his stuff in his own name without you mentioned....hehehehehhe............... Sit his azz down and say look you wanna do that fine.......but you will get no mention as far as trhe music itself is concerned......let me let you in on a little secret flash

THE MUSIC IS ALWAYS WORTH MORE IN ROYALTIES THEN LYRICS

i.e when you here music from a commercial, video/dvd/film, tv in general from shows to documentarys its allways the beat of the music with out the words........ The copyright owner of the musical composition gets paid for that not the lyric owner......put it this way every time a lyric of that song is played it will always be followed with the music......but you can have the music stand alone without the lyrics.......

So tell Mr. Copyright that you got no problem with it........ and write new lyrics urself in the future if you want, but he'll always be stuck with words and would have to build a musical composition around it....you own the main part

There is this copyrighty thingy on AandRonline.com...can it be trusted? will it actually copyright my bands songs?
thanks a lot,
Daniel

No big deal, let him. After all he DID write the lyrics. Good lyrics are hard to write, and depending on the genre of music, it could be THE selling point for the song. Country/Folk music is pretty much ALL about the lyrics. Nothing really to worry about unless Mr. Major Label comes a knocking. And then you guys can worry all the way to the bank. :)

Flash,
There is absolutely no reason to use a middleman to copyright your songs. Go to http://www.loc.gov/copyright/forms/ and download Form PA (and Form PA Instructions). Fill out the form, get a money order for $30 and send it in. It's that simple! You can send in the form with one song on it for $30 or a whole collection of songs (give it a collection name) for $30. It's just $30 each time you send one of those forms in. This is one of the few things Uncle Sam has made easy to do. DO NOT pay someone to do this because this is all he will do and he'll charge you for it. If I remember right you send the form, money order, lyrics sheet and CD. That's it!!! It'll probably take about 8 months to get your copyright certificate back so do this now! Don't believe the crap about mailing yourself a copy to protect your song. I guarantee a big time lawyer could get around that if needbe. Keep in mind your song is technically copyrighted the minute you create it but you have to prove it. $30 buys a lot of piece of mind.
