Hey everyone :-)

I wanted to get some opinions on this... My personal website is being worked on. I wanted to list some of my lyrics on it. I am going to copyright the actual website (full content, graphics, etc) and of course the lyrics will be apart of my site. Do you think this is a "wise" idea? Or do I literally need to copyright each individually? Or a collection of work outside of the website? Ideally i'd like to sell some of my songs.....

Thanks in advance for your opinions...

The primary purpose of registering a copyright is to create documented evidence that you invented it first. Theoretically, a time-stamped web page with a copyright date could constitute such evidence.

On the converse side, the courst have been notoriously bad at making sensible rulings in regards to intellectual property, especially when it comes to the internet and new media.

I would think you should be fine, but that's just a guess. Nothing I say constitutes valid legal advice! :D

Thanks! I think I'm just going to do it that way for starters... :)

The chances of your lyrics getting ripped off are very rare.

Your work is automatically copyrighted when you write them.

To register your work, contact the Library of Congress. You can do it online and register your copyright. It's fast and cheap.

Here's your link:
http://www.copyright.gov/

Through copyright.gov you can send in an entire album or group of works
and have them registered as a compilation. That's the most cost-effective.
(last time I looked it was only $40)

Time-stamps and self-mailed envelopes are totally useless for legal purposes.

It's at least $45 as of two or three years ago.

Online copyright is only $35.00 You can upload as many MP3's as you want in 45 days. I did about 40 last month. They are very helpful and told me how to exclude previously registered work from my present claim. I've done 5 claims since 1979. All collections, or volumes 1 through 5.

If I can do it, anybody can, and yes it's $45.00 through the mail, but to do it online is a new feature that is only $35.00.

It's a lot quicker too. I did mine about 45 days ago and I've already gotten my certificate in the mail. Snail mail takes about 6 months.
