Captain Sea Boots
I was working on "ghetto-mastering" a track today and put to use a trick I learned from Bob Katz's book "Mastering Audio..." The only hardware compressor I have is an RNC. For software, I have the Classic compressor, Classic limiter, and mda limiter (all the freebies). Anyway, I had a song that was just a little too dynamic. If I used no limiter, the volume was a bit too far below the rest of the album. But those freebie limiters were sucking the life out of the track.
So I ran the final stereo bus out to the RNC with the following settings:
threshold:-40
ratio:around 1.5:1
Voila! Exactly what I was looking for. Subtle compression that didn't kill the drums.
