Hi,

When I try to record from my minidisc using Cool Edit Pro, I'm getting a lot of hiss on quiet songs. The hiss is not on the disc itself.

Also, can someone tell me how I can set Cool Edit to record streaming audio from the internet.

I was always able to do this with my old Dell machines, but have not been able to figure it out with my HP media center.

Thanks for any help.

The hiss is probably because you are putting too low a level into CEP and then reamplifying it. I know this is a pain to set up, and I don't know the easy answer. Try AFSrecorder for downloading streaming audio - it gets to the audio behind asx files which are just small text instructions, which once downloaded (slow) can be loaded into CEP.

Stephen,

Thanks for your help. You pinpointed my problem with the hiss.

I was relying too much on the Normalization process, so I started recording at half the input level on my minidisc recorder. Then I would get all hiss on the quiet songs.

Will try the software you recommended.

Thanks again for your help - I was trying all sorts of things - different microphones.

Dan

Is there any way of uploading quickly from minidisc into Cool Edit Pro?

Not that I know of - I just put it through the "Line In" and record real-time.

To record streaming audio, just open the Windows volume control panel, go to the 'Recording' options, and set 'Wave', or 'Stereo Mix' as your recording source. If you have a soundblaster, it might be called 'What U Hear'. This will work for recording anything you hear coming out of your speakers.

Then just hit the record button in Cool Edit, and play the streaming media and it should record.
