Hi I currently am using cool edit pro 2.1 with a basic setup plus a CAD u37 mic
when I record I don't get the sound I'm looking for trust me I give a lot of energy but what i get back is choppy vocals with dry voice.
here is a sample of my work and trust me i need help on mixing

guys can you tell me what i can do?
any basic settings to save
I need help mainly on mixing and mastering help?

Sound to me like the vocal performance needs the work. There is a difference between putting 'energy' into a performance and actually making it musically energetic/exciting.
Listen from 1:30 - it just sounds dull vocally. 'tremendous, stupendous' sound like you're bored.
I'm exaggerating deliberately because chances are that you can't hear it if you're recording yourself.

In terms of "basic settings to save" - I'm afraid this doesn't really exist as most people here will happily tell you.
It's always a case of what the individual song / instrument / vocal / tone / mix needs

The basic setting is just experience and practise

Hope it helps!

okay, like i do put in energy and effort but my mixing isn't really good so that's why the voice is dull
what is the effect i should start out with
i only know about reverb but still makes it sound horrible

you're not understanding me.
You might be putting in 'energy' but it doesn't sound like it. Your vocal performance needs to sound more exciting. It's not the mix.
forget plugins, settings and reverb for now.

I know it seems like I'm deliberately not answering your question - but honestly that's the best thing you can do.

There is no plugin you should start out with. It doesn't work like that.
Forget about reverb now.
Work on the sound of the performance

Other than what has already been said, the vocal is not up front in enough in the mix and the whole track does not have that slammed mastered sound of modern tracks.

If you determined to work with your current takes then compress that vocal ( try real audio compander as start guide in CEP ) and then raise it up the front. You will only need very short reverb. Maybe nice presence or natural in CEP but wind back the wet level. Try applying the graphic EQ and trying out the brilliance preset as a starter.

When mixed down, switch to edit view and hard limit the entire mix. You made to undo and EQ some more then hard limit again.

Hard limiting is the last stage as any EQ on the master after that may cause clipping.
