Again - The point is moot - I don't condone compression before corrective EQ. But if someone wants to do it, I'm certainly not going to "trash" him for it. But theft is a different story, no?

Massive Master is right.

This issue has been debated to death.

On one side: "my parents won't buy it for me, no matter how much I whine, and anyway I won't get caught."

On the other: "it's stealing. End of story."

I have read thousands of rationalizations that purport to explain to guys like me how stealing is OK and how young artists "need" free software in order to express their inner souls.

Sorry, you ain't no artist and your inner soul is that of sneak thief. Buy the damn software. If you can't afford it, do without. There is free recording software out there. If you have to have bragging rights in front of the other middle schoolers, get a job.
