After a few years with the Yamaha AW4416, I finally am fed up with slow editing and lack of compatibility with Pro Tool users. I am going to purchase a Digidesign Digi 002 with the factory bundled package. Any suggestions on which Mac to get? I am leaning towards a laptop for mobility. However, I want to limit any limitations when recording. I mostly will be using 16-24 tracks with moderate to heavy effects on each. I have never owned a Mac so this too is new. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Todd

I'm running the Digi002 with a PC and I have no problems. My set up is Athlon based with 1.5 gigs of RAM. If you have to go Mac don't get a notebook.

Thanks Michter. Any specific reasons on not going with the notebook?
I was just at the Apple store and monitors run from $800 to $2500 which could be a deciding factor.
Thanks,
Todd

Just for the fact that when they break they are a pain to fix and expensive. There is a bit more flexibility with a Tower style computer. It's just been my experience that note books aren't as reliable. You do still have your stand alone unit if you need to do mobile recording though. Right?

I will actually be selling my aw4416 to help defray the costs of the new set-up. I hear you in regards to fixing a tower vs. a laptop. It would probably also be easier for upgrades down the road too. I am still trying to get a feel for how fast of a computer (and how much memory) I would need while working on various projects. For example, if i was working on a 7-10 song project with the average song running 16-24 tracks with moderate effects, would I need a 2, 2.3 or 2.5 gig computer with say 512 of RAM? Do you send songs to a zip drive or something similar when completed to free up more room on your harddrive? These are the things that I have no clue on. I would hate to buy a computer that can't handle an average project like I mentioned.
School me please.

i have an ibook g4 1.42ghz, all pushed to the max specs, and it just didnt cut it. i just got an imac g5 2 ghz and it blows it away.

if you need the laptop, either a used powerbook, or a macbook PRO, the regular one might not be enough.

you need an external HD, and DIGI is limited in compatibility. in order to daisy chain (laptops only have one firewire in) it has to have an "oxford 911 chipset". i found out the hard way, through 2 RMA's. FANTOM Drives supports it, ONLY the firewire ones, not the combo or USB.

As for apple monitors- the prices are not worth it, i dont think. check out newegg.com and get a decent monitor there. expect to pay 200-500, depending on your size, widescreen, pixels etc.

The ibook is ok for tracking. no problems at all. however, it is limited in processing power when it comes to mixing, and i kept having CPU limit errors in pro tools. thats my setup now; if i need to go, i take the laptop and track it, and mix it at home. WHen im recording at home though, i just stick with the desktop.

I dont like Protools on pc, its just not as simple/stable as on the macs. im using a pc now, but i wouldnt for anything else :)

Macs are more money for a reason; INTELLIGENT design :) everything you plug into the firewire or usb ports just works... no drivers blah blah blah, windows problems etc.

the warranty covers alot, as long as you dont drop kick your computer, your pretty much covered. you can extend it at anytime if you want too.

its just like learning how to use a pc again, back at square one. you'll catch on fast though. i went from no mac skill, to now i can diagnose and fix all sorts of problems on macs, in less than a year. it feels very weird the first time you turn the new mac on though, im warning you. you feel power and simplicity at your fingertips as the hair on your back stands up.

i should get a check from apple for this... i'd make a great sales rep huh?

..wait i am a sales rep, just not for apple lol...

I got a mac notebook about 2 years ago after using pc's my whole life and it completely blows any pc out of the water, i have had no problems with it what so ever and I record with it almost everyday with my mbox, you should check out the new mac book pro's, they come loaded with plenty of firepower

oh yeah, and max out the ram, dont buy expensive apple ram if you cant afford it. check out dealram.com, and just enter your system.

1.5gb minimum really...

Tragik,
Would I really need 1.5 Gig of ram for an average project? Even the largest Mac G5 only comes with one gig of ram and that computer is around $3500.

i think you might. tracking is nothing, it could be accomplished with 512mb perfectly fine. if you are doing any mixing, involving plugins, you need an upgrade. you can get the 512m, and then when running protools, open up the resource meter (theres one right inside protools, i found it the other day :)) and see how close to capacity you are running, and judge from there.

my projects are not large at all, 4 drum tracks with eq, compression and a master reverb eats up ram pretty quickly.

Tragik, thanks for the tips. I bought the apple 2.3ghz tower with 512 of Ram. I'll upgrade accordingly. Thanks Again
