Converting CD to MP3

I need to convert my song to MP3 to put them online. Is there a program that converts directly from CD>MP3? What is the best program that most professionals use that retains the most quality?
 
dbpower amp gives you lots of options, but it costs money. Itunes can do it for free, but with less options (mainly it lacks variable bit rate options I think)
 
Im looking for something that will give me the highest quality possible. Is their a standard that most people use. Also what is better LAME or fraunhofer?
