I don't think this has been suggested yet and it my seem a little out of left field, but why not coonsider a pre-loved RADAR I or II?
You will get 24(!) channels of absolute pro quality AD/DA converters for $2-3000 and a rock solid recording platform to boot. I know a few people in similar situations are going this way.
