Other than the hands on feel of units like the Tascam fw-1884, what other benefits do you get my using these units? If you don't use one, like if I go with the Firepod, should I buy an EQ (or can I just use the one in the software do they effect the sound at different times?.)

The Tascam unit and Firepod both have 8 mic preamps, which I would like to mic my drummer, are one better than another?

I see most pictures of peoples home studio have some kind of mixer or something like this. Is this more common than just running into an inteface like the Firepod and going to the computer.

or by buying individual components are you more "flexible"

Man, I have the same issue....My choice so far is the Tascam since I have found no information regarding converters or pre amps being better in any of the units.

I lke the control surface and a friend of mine who has a Pro Tools based Studio has that control surface and I love it. I guess you can get a Mackie and a fireface but the expense would exceed the benifit in that case Im guessing.

I'll be watching this thread closely.

(BTW the EDIT button is a good thing........)

Read the Tascam forum and the Yamaha Forums. Seems to be some issues with these units. I may go with the Mackie/fireface solution. Doesnt appear Tascam or Yamaha is ready for prime Time,

I was just reading about the mackie mixers and it sounds like they have pretty good mic preamps. Are they as good as soem of the rack mount units i see others using on here (MOTUs, Firepod, etc) Thought about just buying a mixer that has the preamps and running to a soundcard or by fire wire. ?

Just get a firepod... why are the sliders so important to you? with the rack you have knobs and save yourself like 400 bucks

that is what I am starting to lean towards, i am patient enough to use my mouse/keyboard to work my system (I should, I work for a software company.) I guess my concern with the firepod is that if I decide to use that as my interface and go firewire am I limited to using that if I decide to expand on my system, other than "stacking" more Firepods? Or can you run the Firepod thru firewire and run another preamp thru a sound card or something?? Just don't want to screw myself on down the line.

maybe its just me but can you shrink the font on your name sig? its a bit distracting when trying to read your posts

I agree. And the split one sentence posts don't help either. I guess he wants to increase his number of posts. IN any case I m looking at the TAscam FW 1884 even though there are issues....or the MAckie HUI and a Firepod. I definatly want the control surface. Especially since my Mackies are going on Ebay.

I picked up a Mackie HUI refurbed for $600... I'm happy enough with it for the price (and features) but the Mackie control has better implimentation for a broader array of DAWs (HUI was designed for Pro Tools but many of the daws are somewhat compatible)... though I don't think there will be anymore development for this discontinued product...

sorry about the signature, thought it was fun. Curious, why would I care about how many posts I have. I am just trying to ask questions to learn this stuff.
