bollocks redux!
Disclaimer: This is a wild theory with no basis in fact or even reasonable suspicion, fueled by my own gear lust:

Every time I see a good deal on a used SM-57 these days I always hesitate, because I'm not sure if it's fake or not. The fakes are good enough that if you don't know what to look for, you might not know that you even have one. It made me think-- 57's are some of the most durable mics around-- they last a long time, can take a beating and still work, and they hold their value pretty well cause they're cheap to start with. As a result used 57's pop up all the time. They are studio stalwarts that have so many uses. Shure keeps manufacturing them and they can't be too complicated to assemble so they must be piling up.
Who better then to finance and promote a Chinese counterfeiting scheme than Shure themselves. If you can never be sure if you're getting a real one if you buy new ones from non Shure dealers on ebay, or used from any number of places, it kind of makes the idea of paying $10-30 more from a dealer/retailer more appetizing.
So that's my conspiracy theory. Shure is counterfeiting their own mics with cheap Chinese labor to drive consumers to only buy new SM-57's from official Shure dealers.

incidentally, they said the same thing about abraham zapruder and earl warren, but they got all the bitches :D

Hello, yes I will smoke what ever he is smoking?????

geez. it was a dumb joke . if it's to the point where some random newbie dude is going to offer up some lame diss of me in the form of a question (this isn't jeopardy, though i like the extra question marks for emphasis), then i just give up. :D

what's the best rap mic for under $100 again?

oh for anyone keeping score-- he doesn't have that red cause of me :)

My eye has been drawn by the new CAD ribbon mic, but I can't even consider that until I get my Oktava modded! ;)
you will not regret it-- my oktavamodded mk-219 is kind of a desert island mic for me.
you know there's that whole, well-documented chinese fake oktava conspiracy... but that's old news. :D

Mine's a real Russkie, no doubt about that!

Funny thing... I suggested much the same... not that Shure makes the fakes or anything, but that they are fear mongering and overhyping the risk of fake Shure mics so that they can sell more mics....

I think they're actually made by a band of trans-sexual gyspsies.

Hired by the CIA ... with the idea in mind that if they can get people hooked on something as stupid as recording people's bad music with them ... that they'll never bother becoming terrorists. They'll be too busy trying to get the crappy SM57 copies to sound halfway decent ... that blowing themselves up would just require too much brain energy.

.

lol...

And when I was part-way through the original post (assuming that you were going to ask some detailed question about determing fakes vs. used real 57's), I was actually planning on saying "Well, the new ones are so cheap, why not just suck up the extra 20 bucks and buy a new one - then ya get a warranty and much less risk of defect"

...either I'm a Shure insider, or they've indeed pulled off their plan really well.

In the same vein I always thought that most internet viruses were designed by anti-virus siftware companies.

Now I have justify buying the Merc sm57.
Anyone ever heard one?

Yowza! $185 for an SM57 with a sexy tranny? Just buy an M201

yeah that's another idea m201/revox. i know a tech in the city who is a big fan of the tab-funkenwerk transformers for tube mics, so i wonder how much of a difference this will make. there's also the boiled transformerless sm57 mod, or the recording (magazine) gizmo attachment-- ever try either of those mshilarious?

Nope, I ain't into boiling microphones. I would just buy an M201. Or if you are cheap, just buy a capsule here:

The recording mag bit, I don't know about.

For anybody that removes the tranny, drop in some decoupling caps if the mic will ever see phantom, otherwise the capsule's response may get distorted in the presence of phantom. I don't know this for a fact with a transformerless SM57, but I do from the SM63.
