Considering getting Cool Edit 2.1

Hey guys, I have not done a lot of recording lately (2 years) and what I used to record was mostly MIDI so I didn't need much audio editing capabilities. Now, I have invested in some microphones and pre-amps and would like to record more audio. I don't do as much to justify getting Pro Tools or Nuendo and I think Cool Edit is a fantastic piece of software, regradless of the cost. My question is: What type of machine are you running your Cool Edit on? (Processor, speed, memory, OS, hard drives etc.) I have an older machine with a 766 Celeron so I just wanted to see what you guys had and what kind of results you were getting as far as how many tracks you were able to record and how many plugins you were using. Thanks for the help!
 
I am running Cool Edit 2.1 on a 433 Celeron with 256 RAM and a 10 Gig HD.

I have no problems.. Knock on wood.. Well, fake wood..

Thanks! Up to how many tracks you'd been able to record?
 
I usually don't need more than 20 but I have had no trouble with that number...
 
I've got a PIII 600 mhz and 512 RAM running XP professional with a 40 gig 7200 RPM hard drive just for audio files (& a 16 gig for apps and os)

I've had 40 tracks of 32-bit float 44.1 khz audio going (with no real-time effects) with no drama

Thanks for the replies! So I guess I shouldn't worry too much about my computer not being able to handle 20 to 24 tracks. Is there another issue I should consider? I'm using Win ME and a MIA card.
 
A very small minority of people have problems with 2.1. Nobody knows why exactly, but it's been suggested that old soundcards can sometimes be the culprit. The recommended approach is to download the demo and see if it runs on your system. Try recording with 2.1, editing with it, and doing file management stuff like making copies of tracks and sessions and inserting tracks from other sessions and renaming tracks - the whole banana. If you put it through its paces and there are no hiccups, then buy it, cuz it's a really nice program.
