Connecting mic pre and interface

Hi, i have the Focusrite Saffire Pro 24 DSP and i was thinking that in the future i might wanna add some mic preamp for more channels. i noticed that the mic premps have XLR outputs, so if i'll get a stereo mic pre, it will take up the only 2 XLR inputs i have in my Focusrite, so i dont get any additional mic channels. is there a solution for that? maybe a way to connect the mic pre to the DI inputs?

I don't understand how come the mic preamp is connected to the interface through XLR. the signal is amplified by the mic pre and then amplified again by the interface's internal mic pre? why?

Also, i notice that some mic preamps have digital output, can i use it to save up the XLR inputs on my Focusrite?

Thanks!

When you use an external preamp, it will not be further amplified by the interface as long as the gain is zero on the interface's preamp. And i don't know about the digital about outputs. What kind of connection is it? Is it AES/EBU? Slave in/Master Out? Either way, i don't think your interface supports any digital inputs, so no, the digital outputs won't save your XLR inputs.

The Focusrite DOES have s/pdif and optical inputs, so yes if your outboard preamp does those you get more inputs.

2channels on s/pdif and 8channels on ADAT optical.

Yes, more inputs but you don't get more outputs = you still only get 8 out.
