and seriously lets not get into the whole emo thing. i think one of the greatest points in my life is when i stopped acknowleding that genres even existed.

Well put. This thread is just crackers. I thought my purevolume example illustrated how interchangeable these genre names have become.

By the way, no one in the Hardcore scene plays Hardcore anymore. It's mostly Metal these days, Death Metal in some cases. That's not bad, it's just that Hardcore is a misnomer when you sound more like old Metallica and Slayer than, oh say, Gorilla Biscuits.

Anyway, that's all off topic. I'm glad to see that many of you are recording screamers and that you're experimenting with it. Screaming is an artform, and so should be recording it.

will from orchid runs his own studio. dead air studios i think its called? hes a lot better than in the orchid days.. the ampere 10" is smoking.

i just watched a chimara dvd and when they were recording the singer was screaming into a condensor mic. I always thought you would use like a sm57 or dynamic mic for this type of vocal. Is it cool to use a condensor for screaming vocals? Is there some special way to record using one im kinda confused on this but DAM HIS VOCALS COME OUT GOOD!!!!!! please anyone help me on this!!!!!!

My forte is metal...all kinds....including screaming vocals. All I have to offer this thread is this (thse are my opinions based on my experience - if anyone disagrees feel free to say so):

1) the talent and skills of the singer is far more important than the mic. If you have a sorry ass singer and you record him perfectly with top of the line gear, all you get is a great recording of a sorry ass singer.....

2) ...but, it is usually better to use a condenser than a dynamic for vocals, although dynamic mics CAN be a good thing. The STYLE of the singer has little to do with the TYPE of mic you choose to record him with. His VOICE has more of an influence over that.

3) if the singer wants to hold a mic in his hands, cool. Get a hand held condenser.

4) if the singer wants to cup the mic with his hands to get a big cookie moster sound, bitch slap him and tell him to go home and practice. That oh-so-overpopular mic techniqe has NEVER (in my limited experience) produced anything but sonic excrement. 9 times out of 10 the sound that singer is after will be better achieved with practice.

5) no one can ever tell you what mic, effect, or settings to use for what. You MUST decide for yourself. The only thing you can be told are basic guidelines. That IT. Now go create.

Have fun!! :D

What specific type of screamer has the 3035 worked well on? I'm considering one and I'd just like to know what all it's useful for.

I totally agree... everything is so mixed up these days. Why bother calling it a whole genre...The used are more "soft" sounding than anything...lol they have so many "beautiful" accoustic songs lmao. But skipwave is right... there are so many different ways to approach it :) And just because someone calls you emo doesnt mean your a bad songwriter... I think that no matter what music you do...as long as you love it... your fine. Dont let other people piss on you. Other people may not like it...but they dont have to lol. Just calling yourself "hardcore" is putting you further from actually "being hardcore"... people are just gonna think "ok well that guys just saying that to be cool  ". You know what I'm saying guys? Like we're all what we want to be.. punk...goth...metalhead...gangster...or w/e as long as we do what we want and arent over ruled by other peoples opinions like lables lmao. Take "The Refused" for example... they were a swedish band that mostly all their words coming out of their mouths were "screamo" but they also had JAZZ and TECHNO other stuff into their music. Everyone labled them a "screamo" and a hardcore band...but they kinda just blew it off saying "we play music... we couldnt care less of what people call us or think" it shouldnt be about "pleasing the fans with your lyrics" or how you sing/scream things. :) Anyways lol I like alot of stuff and hey if you guys dont like my opions then that's fine... but just remember that there's no real reason to categorize. We all write or listen to music and thats what we all want to do. :) Later

Refused played pretty straight-up chuggy hardcore up until "The Shape Of Punk To Come" so its kind of misleading to say that they always sounded like that. I know what you mean though, and that record is great.

Refused were pretty horrible until "songs to fan the flames.." which was a great album and "the shape of punk to come" being their best work ever. One of the best "punk" albums ever in my opinion. Yes, genres are silly for the most part. They are designed to help explain and categorize music but it often gets too silly so it's important not to take them too seriously and not to get too caught up in listening to or making music that fits into a pre-determined genre. Most of the music I listen to is pretty hard to categorize. And yes, I'm well aware that "hardcore guy" is probably the lamest user name on this board. I made it like 5 years ago, I was 16, you know how it goes.

It is an amazing album :) ...and one of the best "punk" albums I think, is The Clash, London Calling. I have it on ORIGINAL VINYL yes VINYL lol...and it's in like amazing condition. My dad bought it when he was in university working for a radio station. Such original stuff then. I also love Fugazi... But Refused were alot more metal i think...like the older stuff and thats why i never liked their older stuff really.. i love The Shape of Punk to Come though.. and the one before it. I would consider "hardcore punk" (if we wanted to use genres) to be like Alexisonfire... i dont know if any of you know who they are...lmao :p !! but they are just nuts the way they move and how they write...like there isnt really a "structure" for the song...and thats the way i write too...i dont follow "standard" structure of a song.. And Refused did that also. :D

Glad to hear support for Refused. It's a shame they didn't get much while they were still around. I worked for Victory Records, who put out "Songs to..", around the time that Refused broke up. I was sad then, and I still miss 'em now. But they didn't feel like they could continue, and had to go form I.N.C. and make that weird-ass TEXT record.

Here's a fun fact. The song "New Noise" was in the show 24 and on an episode of The Real World.

I'm actually writing a "hardcore" record with a friend, so we can pay tribute, indirectly, to bands like Refused, who inspired us to keep playing when we were younger. We are going to do our best to do justice to those bands, and have fun doing it. That's right.... we're down for life.

Thats awesome. When was the newnoise video released... because I know The shape of punk to come, was re-mixed in surround sound on Epitaph Records.

every single person i've talked to who has heard that remix basically said that it butchered the album. i don't want to hear it because i don't want my opinion of the album to change.

oh god that refused dvd is fucking terrible.

applejax you type like a giddy 13 year old girl.
