i just watched a chimara dvd and when they were recording the singer was screaming into a condensor mic. I always thought you would use like a sm57 or dynamic mic for this type of vocal. Is it cool to use a condensor for screaming vocals? Is there some special way to record using one im kinda confused on this but DAM HIS VOCALS COME OUT GOOD!!!!!! please anyone help me on this!!!!!!

You really need to have a good solid screamo singer before you go next. Like screamo cant really be fixed that much with eq.... SM57 are pretty commun for screamo. But can still use side address condensers for it. I know alot of engineers just use the same mic they're using for the person's normal vocals. I've used a condenser on my band's screamo and everything worked out fine. it also depends on what type of screamo you are looking for too. :)

high spl

yea i guess just try both maybe but i read that a rode nt1a or something like that, has a high spl and is good for screaming vocals is this true and if so maybe i will swoop one of those mics.

Yeah, the singer of Dillinger Escape Plan records through a high-end condenser mic as well. I can't remember the make and model off hand, but on the DVD that comes with their last album "Miss Machine" there is studio footage that shows this.

I think your are correct, in that, the most important thing is using a mic that can handle the SPL without clipping. A good pop filter and mic placement are also vital. You do stand to gain some presence by using a condenser, but sometimes a dynamic is just the right mic to suit the voice. Consider that Henry Rollins tracks his vocals through an SM58.

yeah high spl mic's are the way to go... and make sure you have some head room cause some guys scream REALLY loud. And a pop filter should be manditory for recording ;)

On the cheap, these condensors have done a great job on a variety of screamers for me.

I have recorded a bunch of screaming/ shouted vocals, and it really is the same as recording any vocal: One mic will flatter the performance without much eq or processing, while another will make you work harder in the mix.

Trying multiple mics on a singer can be a huge asset to the end product, as the mix is easier, and simply sits better with the vocal.

Try a couple of mics, and see which one works best for the singer. It is the same "instrument" as any other singer....

i am really uncomfortable at how much you use the word "screamo" here

personally i haven't found a mic that i enjoy for screaming yet. i have a low budget though so i'm not surprised. right now i'm just using an mxl 990 or an sm57.

*screams* ;) whats so wrong about saying SCREAMO :) :D Besides that was 2:30 AM ...i wasnt thinking straight lol

screamo is considered a type of music, not a type of singer.

Just peruse the style descriptions at purevolume.com and see all the screamo you can handle. Also note how often it is paired with the word emo.

A friend used to make fun of me by saying, "Oh, you're so emo." I'm really more screamo, though, really.

SCreamo isnt a type of music... "hardcore" is... and i guess you could categorize that as ALL scream eg: Alexisonfire ...they have some screamo but not all. See there are now alot of emo bands (SHotgun Rules, FullyDown) that are emo but with bits of screamo in the background. ;) So its not *JUST* a type of music... i dont think any genre is by itself any more...so many people incorporate different styles into other bits of music. :)

Skipwave your right though...emo is ALWAYS with screamo when most people think of it... it's not JUST one type of genre though. And thats what alot of people think.. :) Cheers

technically, screamo is a horrible word in the first place. i would refrain from using it in any situation if at all possible.

half the people here are thinking, "i like the used, so i guess i'm screamo?"

I dont mind an AT4050 on screaming vocals. Has worked pretty well in the past. I believe ive also used the Neumann TLM193 and the Royer 122 (not condensor though) for screaming too.

It just really depends. I think alot of screamers like to use dynamics because they can hold them in their hands. They at least try it out because it gives them more of the live feel. Especially when i have a huge EV Re20 in their hands. But then they find out theres alot of noise carried with it and it just doesnt sound as good. Though some might prefer that sound anyway.

LoL.. so you hate posers and labels there "hardcore guy" :D

ok so i've heard a surprising amount of screamed vocals that i liked lately that were recorded with a studio projects b1. i might have to get one to try out.

and seriously lets not get into the whole emo thing. i think one of the greatest points in my life is when i stopped acknowleding that genres even existed.

What specific type of screamer has the 3035 worked well on? I'm considering one and I'd just like to know what all it's useful for.
