Condenser mics Vs dynamics for live use

Nowdays I know that there are some excellent condenser mics out now for live use but I feel that a good dynamic is still the ideal mic for live application.

I have two Audio technica mics , The Audio technic ATM 710 which is the condenser mic and the ATM 610 is the dynamic.

Although the ATM 710 has a wider frequency response and sounds great live plus is £20 more then the ATM 610.

The dynamc ATM 610 was the sound i preffered as I felt I had more control vocally and was able to sing comfortably.

I know that there are lots of other good mics other then the AT's which do a beautiful job.

Is it always the best practice to use dynamics in dong live singing?

The answer depends on the situation. If it is loud music, the answer is generally yes. The condensor will simply pick up too much of what you don't want and feed back more, and any improvement in sound quality is harder to hear.

If softer music, or in broadcast situations, condensors can be practical.

I recently acquired a Neumann KMS105, but in four gigs I have done since, I haven't chosen to use it. My other dynamic and ribbon mics just give me more usable volume and QUITE adequate quality.
 
I generrrly sing ballads to mid tempo stuff . i will still use the condeser occasionally
 
Theoretically I would say the condensor would be better for vocals. Generally I find them to be much more controllable than a dynamic mic as far as technique goes form an artists side of things. However, quality of the room, engineers, PA and other equipment often dictate whether or not condensors can be used in certain situations or not.

The fact is that a Shure sm57 is popular because it sounds OK and it costs $89. Soundguys REALLY hate to lose hundreds if not thousands of $$ in mics that "get lost" at most gigs.

Try this: Put your U87 up on a stand at some shows and see how many tears run down your face when they tell you it's gone.
