I have been getting a wooshing noise from my condensers lately; it sounds like someone is blowing into the mic even though the room may be silent. Are my mics busted or is this at all normal?

any info would help

thanks

Are you sure the room is silent? Condensers are very sensitive. Your computer can be louder than you think, if that's on. If a window is open, the street noise may be louder than you think. Make sure it's REALLY silent, then you'll know if there's something wrong with the mic.

But, to answer your question: No, it's not normal if the room truly is quiet.

Whooshing sounds through speakers or headphones???

If speakers I'd say it's a feedback loop. Disable the speakers when the mics are live.

If headphones and a pair of mics I'd say sounds like maybe a phasing issue.

Got any ceiling fans??? :D

Many sorts of damage, especially where the capsule has been exposed to condensation or water, can cause whooshing noises. Were your mics in any unusual situations recently?

It's most likely moisture... put a silica packet in there or some other absorbant crap

as the fellow said, most likely moisture, drying it out may fix it although I've had to clean the diaphragm on one mic to sort it out

eratic noise, something lik "whooshing"

I had this happen on a CAD GXL 2400. Told the guy I bought it from on ebay and he mailed me a new one for no replacement fee.

I don't know what caused the problem.

Its usually caused by a bad capacitor. I've delt with this on numerous occasions. Send it back if its new.

Whooshing can be a tube

I've had this problem with tube mics and have fixed them by replacing the tube...

What kind of mic was it?

You also said 'mics' as in all of your mics are doing it now. Sounds like the common link may be the phantom power supply.

True! I got my royer modded mics back from Edde King. One made the exact sound as a bad capacitor would and it was the tube. If you overload them, or the filament voltage is too high, it causes the same problems.

Yep! After reading this again, I would have to agree it is something else in the signal chain. One mic having a problem would be just the mic, but ALL??...

Something else!!

Check the board or preamps. I suspect phantom issues! Northsiderap may be right!
