Computer/sound card set up

I have an IBM Pentium 3 computer with 550MHz and 128MB RAM. I want to do some vocal recording on my computer (no instruments) and have been advised to either upgrade my RAM OR get an upgrade kit for an extra few hundred dollars which has Pentium 4, 3.0GB, 512MB RAM. Does anyone recommend this? Then on top of that, I could get:

1. An external soundcard such as the Tascam US-122 (an all in one solution with phantom power etc)
2. One of the Behringer or AT Condenser Microphones

I ONLY want to record my vocals so a simple set up will do. Just wondering what people thought about the above or if they had any recommendations?
 
if your computer is ibm brand, be careful of an upgrade...

you can't us a pIIII in a pIII socket, so that means you might have to upgrade the motherboard, and most ibm cases will only fit ibm motherboards.

i would bump it up to 512k of ram, upgrade to winxp, put a usb card in if necessary to get usb2.0 functionality and buy the tascam thingy and a c3 or at3035 if you got any money left. you want your voice to sound good, don't ya?

this system should work for maybe 10 tracks playback or mixing, you will be suprised what you can get out of it.

think about decent monitors to play back on, cause without them there is no real way to tell what you sound like.
 
I have used a p3 1,1ghz with 256 mb, you can get away with it, but there came a time my pc would just give up and crash...

I used a SP B1 and an M-Audio Mobilepre

as easy as you can get.
