but i've always wandered is there any way to make the bass and treble functions on windows mixer redundant?

i can't help but feel that no matter where you set them,,they defeat the purpose of using good monitors on a PC based setup.

Um, no, otherwise why bother with a good eq in your chain?

They're just very broad controls for boosting/attenuating frequencies just like you'd do in your audio software.

that said, if you're working in audio, you shouldn't be using the Windows mixer anyways...... and if you're just listening to audio you can defeat that eq easily.

I'm not sure if where the bass and treble controls appear in the Windows mixer changes based upon OS version or soud card, but on my Win2KPro system with the standard PC sound card (SoundBlaster PCI), Bass and Treble control is only available on the Mic input. If you're using the Mic input, I might recommend getting a small external mixer or preamp and coming Line In instead of Mic In. Or better yet, if you have a preamp with USB I/O, bypassing the sound card altogether and coming in the USB port instead. But if you are indeed usingthe Mic In, that is without question going to be the very weakest link in the signal chain that you could have and the tone controls aren;t going to help very much regardless of their setting.

sorry guys,,,im new here,,,
should have given full details.

im using win xp spII

i have a creative extigy (using stereo line input)
with a behringer sl2442fx going into it.
i use alesis m1 active mkII's


the bass and treble controls are on my playback volume advanced tab.

so whether im watchin a movie,,listening to cd's or mixing a track (in sony vegas) the bass and treble controls are effecting what i hear.


at the minute,,,i just have them set to levels that make CD'd i know very well sound as i expect them to,,,but i'm guessing my mixes will be better over all if i can just bypass this.

That's what I figured. You should be able to set these controls to 0 (defeat them), no?

If they aren't boosting or cutting the bass/treble, then they shouldn't be affecting your audio.

i thought that too,,,but if you do that,,,you just get a really muggy mix with no bass...they still have effect..


if theres no joy,,,,im buying a delta 1010 soon,,,,maybe a hardware change will take it out of the loop.
