Computer Idiot 101

So ok.. I've got a pretty traditional studio. I've got a MAckie 8 Buss, Alesis HD24, and a Masterlink....

Sittting next to it is a P4 2.4 with a 120 g hard drive. I just ordered the Firewire port from Alesis to transfer audio to the computer. I really don't want to use the computer for recording. I want to do several things that I can't do at the moment..

1. Clean up tracks and mute them automatically.
2. I want to explore the world of sampled drums. I plan on getting drumagog and possibly the program that Cakewalk is selling at the moment for $49.
3.....Possibly... mix in the computer? This might just save me a conversion if I went back into the Masterlink from the computer.

Of course... this pretty much negates my racks of reverbs and such... so I'll have to see.

I downloaded n-Tracks and went to their forum... Nice guys.
I am looking at the Sonar 2.2 at the moment. I really do feel pretty stupid regarding this stuff. Is this massive overkill or will this be just what I need. (uhh...sorry for the blatant ignorance)

yep... you guys won me over I just ordered Sonar XL 2.2 and Drumatic. I got my Alesis Fireport via Fedex this morning so I'm ready to transfer some tracks from ye old HD24 to the puter.

A quick question....Is anyone doing something like me with a Alesis HD24/Mackie 8 Buss/Masterlink? I am very curious... Are DirectX plug ins as good as the equivalent hardware? Is this a hot topic? Am I thinking correctly here... I should be able to import my tracks into Sonar, Edit, Mix, and send to the masterlink digitally without doing conversions?

Umh... I don't have those setup.

I am very curious... Are DirectX plug ins as good as the equivalent hardware?

Well... it's a looong story. If you are patience kind of guy, yet know how to deal with it, it will serve you the benefit of the hardware version. Take it with salt & grain. And IMHO, I can insert as many plugins as my system allows me, with different setting on each tracks. That will beat hardware...

Is this a hot topic?

I ordered SonarXl 2.2 yesterday. It came today. I loaded it on my computer here at work to look at it. Hmm, I don't think this is Kansas Toto.

I'm working through the tutorials. Just for grins I imported a stereo audio file of my band. Boy... did I ever torture that track! I couldn't figure out how to undo reverb changes... I'm sure this will become apparent later. I'm not the smartest feller on the block so this might take awhile...

You can't undo "reverb changes". Have you adjusted the real-time effect, it's stays that way...
