I have used a Roland 840 in the past with an old drum machine. After the purchase of a new computer I will starting using Cakewalk or whatever (recomendations are appreciated). What about beats? Does any of this new software have drum capabilities or do I need to always hook something up from an outside source?
thanks,

It depends on what's your goal also. If you think you need the drum track as the beat keeper not to be emotionally (like some on RNB & disco tunes) then using loops would be good. But if you mean to have a feeling close to real drums, you may want editable MIDI tracks or better yet, record a real drums. Some programs (like Cakewalk, Fruityloops, Acid, etc) come with sample data bundled (MIDI, Wav or whatever) as a source to be sequenced. There would be a good starting point to build your drums track.
