I'm thinking or running a pedal like maybe a boss cs-3 between my guitar and dist pedal and keep things much tighter when I record.

I know distorsion is meant to compress the sound anyway but my big muff doesn't seem to do anything to compress the sound at all. Alos the compresser in cooledit sucks so I don;t want to go the software route. I think it would be much better to compress before my dist pedal anyway.

Would this give decent results or do I need to get a proper compressor? It's just a compressor pedal would be loads cheaper...

I dont think you need to compress a distorted sound......adding another pedal will just add more noise anyway.......what do you mean by "much tighter"?....can you post an mp3 clip......

By "tighter" I meant more even.

Have a listen to the mp3, I know my playing is way off so don't comment on that :-)

How much even do you think you can get it? Sounds pretty even to me.

It's not too bad but if I compare it to Siamese Dream by the Smashing Pumpkins (what I'm trying to sound like if you hadn't already guessed ;-) ) it sounds really uneven and peaky, even the waveform in cooledit has loads of peaks compared to other stuff of CDs.

yeah, that sounds fine....no compressor needed on that....

Thats a big muff? Sounds great. Try putting a little touch of phaser on it set to a slow rate. Instant Pumpkins.....I can't wait to get home to bust out the muff!!! I haven't used it in years.

--oh yeah, no compression needed. Work on your technique as a player....that will cure your problem. (ps: I'm saying that you need to work on your technique because i think your playing sucks.....)

Gargamel: What part of my technique should I really work on? (I havn't been playing long). I have a small stone phaser so I'll try the phaser idea.

Its hard to judge apersons technique from a small 14 second clip...for my taste it lacked some "life"...some "uumph".....technique wise it sounded fine though.....

I should proably keep my mouth shut......Even Steve Morse needs to practice.
