Drawmer 1968 -- vocals and 2 buss
RNC - vocals and general purpose
Symetrix 501 -- bass
Peavey VC/L-2 -- vocals and general purpose (opto compressor)
DBX 160xt -- drums mostly and general purpose
Aphex Compellor -- vocals and general purpose (pretty transparent)
Symetrix SX206 and SX208 - general purpose and really cheap

Oh, yeah, a DBX 266 in my guitar rack (all it's good for IMHO)

I'm looking for some advice on Compressors. I'm considering using one to enhance my Voice Over productions. Which brand would be a sensible and affordable choice in this area? All opinions are welcome.

After reading all of the suggestions I was surprised no one mentioned a Symetrix 528E. If you're pretty much doing voice over production the 528E is a workhorse. New they are $499 but you can pick up a pre owned 528E for less than $300 on ebay. Links below for the 528E. Good luck.

Dbx

DBX286A is very good. $200. I run one ahead of a Samson C-Com.
I use the C-Com for the expander/gate only.

In this particular area I'm fortunate to have a plethora of choices regarding the on board "emulations" provided by the D3200 Korg. I have no need of an outboard unit in this area from my experience so far. Even the on board reverbs are sweet. I did, however get a TC-Helicon VoiceWorks and I must say that is one tight machine. The effects alone are worth the price of entry. Super quiet as well (one of my criteria).

I love my RNC for everything. I can always easily dial in a useable setting.

My behringer mdx4400 is in the closet. I've tried to use it and only achieved frustration. I simply cannot trust the metering on it, and if I go with my ears I can't get it to help a track on any setting.

Hello, I am astonished at the responses to your post. I see ton's of "use this, use that" and ton's of "this is crap, that rules, your a loser if you don't use this" However one thing I have yet to see is an actual ANSWER to your question. So here goes my answer to what compressor's I use:

4=Ashly cl-100
2=aphex expressor (9651's in my dbx 900 rack)
2=aphex compellor (9301a also in the dbx 900 rack)
1=dbx 263
2=alesis 3630
2=dbx 160a
1=presonus acp-88
and I also own but do NOT use because of trial and "ewwww!" lol a dod r-825, behringer composer, and behringer autocom pro's (they will remain for dire emergency, or live use)

Now to attempt to help with your situation. It would be a little easier if I knew your finance's and your actual application but here goes:

The FMR RNC is a great compressor for the money and I plan on purchasing one myself
If you could possibly afford it an 1176 is the perfect compressor for voice work and the new ones are excellent and usually around $1,600

You did not mention what kind of pre-amp your using, The pre-amp is a major part of the chain, as is the cables. As for cables I have never heard a cable effect the transparency of the signal like ZAOLLA. They are expensive but I have spent ALOT more to get alot less sound difference. Your signal chain is only as good as your weakest link.

I must also say that Roger Nichol's with a behringer could probably do more than a hack with an 1176 so talent is a priority as well lol.

If you would like my advice try either the mindprint envoice ($600), or the presonus eureka ($500) they are both mic pre's with exceptional compressor's and eq's. I have actually a/b'd both to a focusrite liquid channel, focusrite isa 220, manley dual mono, and api mic pre and they both shockingly held their own. The only one that was a obvious winner was the isa 220, but both pre-amps definately sounded worthy of being in the same room.

On a personal note I would like to say I am not pleased with the liquid channel it to me was a complete waste of $3,600 !!! Focusrite should leave digital modeling to Line6 lol.

I hope this helps, if you tell me a little more about your existing set-up (mic's, pre-amps, converter's, etc.) I could try and help a little more.

Sorry Hallowdan, but you may want to re-read this thread. There are many answers that are just as informative as yours already in this thread. For instance, maybe read my first reply? In fact, in my first reply I actually talked about the compressors in question, gave my own choice, and did not even talk about which comps I actually use. Your opinion is just as welcome as anyone elses, but maybe you could do it without trying to put other people's down.

There have been lot's of ANSWERS to the original question, for instance my reply which specifically suggested he check out a Symetrix 528E which among other use's is designed exactly for what he asked for. Re read some of the replies and I think you'll find what you didn't on your first read. :)

YIKES!!! I apologize I was not trying to insult anyone. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. There was some good responses I did not mean to imply that there was not, or that anyones was less worthy than anyone elses. I just notice that alot of the replies on here are either "gear-snobby" or just not very well informative. Please do not take my reply as an insult to anyone, I know everyone is just trying to help. I was tired last night and had a long day, things can easily get taken out of context in type that would normally not in speech. I forget that and sometimes do not censor myself as well as I should. However with that said I really don't go out of my way to save anyone's "Feelings" but I do apologize to anyone who may have felt insulted I assure you I in no way meant to degrade anyone. Last night was my first night in here, I will get the hang of it and hopefully get to knw some people on here. That is why I am here, to meet friends and exchange information and idea's. NONE of us are the best in the world at producing/engineering. We could all learn alot from each other and that's all I am aiming for. I have been lucky enough to chat face to face with some big name producers and I must say that usually they are the most modest people on earth. Even the biggest producers in the world with some of the biggest selling albums of all time, will ask newer producers how they do things. The great thing about this recording stuff is that there is no RIGHT way to do it, there is no RULES. It is all just people trying things out and seeing how it works. I hope I at least made my reply seem more like "maybe you could try this" instead of "You HAVE to do it this way" I do not claim to be any better at this than anyone else, and did not mean for it to come off that way. So once again I apologize to whomever I may have offended. I hope my reply helped at least a little bit anyways.

P.S. ljmaxx - LOVE the qoute! that is genious lol.
"Never argue with an idiot. They drag you down to their level then beat you with experience." Mind if I steal that once in a while?

Would you guys say that the RNC is pretty much the best quality compressor for the price? I'm recording drums, bass guitar, electric guitar, vocals, and acoustic guitar.

Compressors in the rack right now include...

Art Pro VLA
Symetrix 525 (2)
Aphex Compellor(2)
Aphex Expressor(2)
DBX 903(2)

What I use them for varies from song to song. What I typically use on specific things, The VLA is across the 2 buss for the drums....One of the 903's is on the kick drum.....a channel of the 525 is on the bass...One of the Expressors is on the snare....I use a Compellor for any track that needs to jump out a bit....I like the 525 on guitars but typically will borrow or rent something a bit more high-end for the featured guitars...an 1176 is good for this, or for acoustic guitars I like the Red Focusrite. In mix down I go to a bigger studio and theres lots and lots of plugs and toys..I like the Waves stuff, as well as the UAD bundle. Next project I'm working with the plug emulations for the Farchild. Hope its as good as it should be.
