Hi everyone, I'm relatively new here and haven't had much luck finding an exact answer to my question.

I'm looking to record an acoustic album on my little Tascam PortaStudio 424 MKIII. What I have is, the Tascam, an old Shure SM57, and a couple of ancient guitar stomp boxes (delay, compressor/limiter, etc.). I am running both the compressor/limiter and delay through my effects loop out from the mixer but it doesn't really seem to be doing much. Essentially, I'm not getting the vox effects I am looking for. My question is, can anyone recommend a cheap effects processor that has say, Reverb, Delay and Compression on it that I can run the Vox and possibly the guitar through? Any other suggestions would be great as well. Thanks a lot!

the tc m300 does all that. the compression is uh.. not great, but the reverbs are good for the price. the delays are nice as well. $125 used?

what are you planning on compressing? there are some very affordable outboard compressors that work well. symetrix, art, ashly, etc. you might want to look at a symetrix 525. you can pick them up for $50-$100. almost as nice as an RNC. maybe a bit more fun as well. and those tiny ART levelars aint so bad for a funny color compressor.

ART vs Digitech 300

The ART is compressor-less.

The Digitech looks like the choice for what you're looking for but be warned --- it will be VERY easy to over-process your vocal. ;)

Would you recommend a cheap compressor and cheap standalone reverb unit instead of the multi-effects unit?

Hey Hey, A cheap compressor and standalone 'verb' unit would be OK. Most multi fx units compressors are alright but if you want serious compression then they're probably not up to it. I use a mix of my trusty Zoom 9030 1/2 rack multi fx and the onboard Tascam 788 fx / compressor. But as stated earlier, just a touch or you'll have an over processed sound. I tend to lightly compress on recording, then add more later if needed, same with the reverb fx.
Check out your compressor options in your budget and maybe a multi fx unit for the reverb / delay stuff...

Hi Zeek,
I think that is probably what I will do then. I just thought of one other thing, not sure if it's a good idea or not but... I have an old Zoom 8080 SuperPlayer guitar multi effects pedal... it's got about 2 million effects on it, could I run vox through that somehow and use the compression and 'verb off of that? Might be a dumb question.

Hey Hey, absolutey right.. but its a quality issue.. My Zoom has a compressor on it, it's ok but not great.. I wouldn't use it for Vox as it doesn't compress enough..
Sounds like you have your delay / reverb fx covered for now so I'd probably look at getting a compressor first.

Hi Zeekle, any cheap compressors you could recommend?

Try this thread for some ideas on cheap compressors.

I have looked at the Samson C, I thought for what I do it sounded like a good price, not to big and easy to use.. although I have no practical experience of it!!
