I have an RNC.

It has a "left in," "right in," "left out," and "right out."

First, can I use this as TWO seperate compressors? Example, if I were micing drums, could I run the snare through the Left and the kick through the right? I realize that the settings would be the same on each, but is this possible?

and

Second...

Can I run, for example, a vocal through the left, and run the left out into the "Right In" to RECOMPRESS it even more, and then run that into my mixer?

I plan on trying this but I'm not at home right now and I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about this stuff.

Also...how do I use the sidechain to de-ess?

Thanks.

sure, although the chances of them needing identical settings isn't that high

It wont damage anything

Use an eq to find the frequency that you want to tame (it doesn't have to be an 'ess') and boost it as much as possible, then insert the eq into the compressor side chain, whenever the boosted frequency appears it will cause the compressor to kick in. Use a fast attack and release and a high ratio and adjust the threshold till it sounds right.

I have the RNC and it is a true stereo commpressor. It is not intended to be used as two seperate compressors. If you do send two different signals through left and right it will act on both and compress both signals even if the other channel is under the threshhold.I talked to the tech support people (great by the way)
and they said it is not designed to be used as two seperate compressors.

Monty,

I'm a little confused about the de-essing.

If I had an E.Q., I'd just cut out the offending frequencies.

Right?

But then it would be gone from the whole track leaving it sounding dull, this way the conpressor kicks in only when that frequency is too loud and then leaves it alone otherwise.
